Wanda, your singing sounded fine at the Waimea kanikapila! As did Unkoh Paul's singing and playing, and all the rest of them too. And folks, she's right about the crowd. At one point I counted 17 guitarists, two uke players, one guy on steel guitar, and yours truly on bass. Beautiful spot there in the pavilion, although the open air design and high roof with a lot of angles caused some acoustic issues. The guy mixing the sound board had volume issues that took fairly long to resolve. At one point Wanda said the bass was too loud; she was sitting right in front of one of the main speakers, and I was much farther away and couldn't hear a single thing, so the sound guy kept tweaking things until he got it right. The steel player was having the same problems. It was really sweet that most of the guitar players (including Patrick) came up afterwards and said they loved the bass. Patrick and a few others asked for my phone number and said they wanted to work together in the future. Kanikapilas are not only fun to play, they're a good method of 'networking.' After leaving Waimea when it ended, I went to another musician's housewarming party on the windward side and ended up playing a 12-string for another three hours. Sore fingers, but a great day of music. Looking forward to your photos of that huge circle, Wanda... |

Sitting across from you in the circle I thought the bass sounded great as did the steel and other instruments. I've never been to a kanikapila with that kind of technical requirements and support nor with that kind of music talent. What a great experience. Thank you all for sharing your music and aloha with us. Dave |

I hope Wanda and Paul are going to write a wrap-up about their trip and post photos of the kanikapila, slack key festival, etc., but before I answer Salmonella, here's a photo from the open mic night:
That was August 10 at Crouching Lion Inn, and the following week the problems were just as bad as what Wanda and I wrote. I think I'm done with going up there. Some good talented musicians, but too many problems with the sound, food, etc. That photo (and 83 others) are at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/6615019/?invitation=d03dda0a8e. I'm in the shirt with the ukes and guitars on it, and in some of the photos you'll see my two five-string basses, one fretted and one fretless. As for the Waimea Kanikapila, thanks, Salmonella. Great to see you there! It was the first I'd heard of it, though it apparently happens the third Sunday of every month. Several of the local regulars asked me to start coming every month, but I dunno. Long drive. I will if I know other Taropatch players will be there. It was a kick playing with 17 guitarists. My previous record was only 10. Back in the day, I used to play every Sunday night at Shipley's in Manoa Marketplace with Mike Kaawa & Friends. Regulars were Mike, Uncle Dennis and David Kamakahi, B.B. Shawn (now Shawn Ishimoto), Bobby Ingano on steel, and yours truly on bass. That was the weekly basic gang. Lots of slack key players dropped in, and the night we had 10 it included Cyril and Martin Pahinui, Roland Cazimero, George Kuo, Makana, Michael Lowe (he used to play with me and Uncle Ray Kane), and Bobby Moderow. Every song lasted at least half an hour, with all the solos. At least one (possibly more) of the photos of our basic gang is on the Hawaii Steel Guitar Association website under the caption of "Shipley's Superjam" -- you can see it at http://www.hsga.org/galleryarchive/honolulu97.html. 'Nuff about that. Wiating to see Wanda's photos from her trip! |

Eh, Wanda, age is the price of "maturity". Remember: as physical abilities decrease, supervisory capacities (quality control, etc) increase.

Cha-heeez. Still bringing up that photo at Shipley's, defunct 10 years already, as "proof" he played with good guys?? Good guys who never asked him to play, but, local kine, found it hard to embarrass him in front of the crowd by saying, "GO AWAY!!" Originally ID'd as "unknown bass player" in that photo, he whined and squealed and stomped his feet until they put a name on it. Too bad no pictures of the night John Cruz's gang plugged him into the potted plant when he jumped on stage uninvited before the band arrived. Best that bass ever sounded. |
