Last time I was at Aloha camp I played a ‘folked up’ (as it were) version of Pachelbel’s canon with Mark. He christened it ‘Taco Bell’s canon’, which was highly amusing. He played guitar, instead of mouth trumpet. If only I’d known……

Just skimming the thread...so, Joni Mitchell is a slack key master! She accomplished this after inventing the internets and promoting slack key zither playing throughout the Sandwich Islands?

Fascinating...

Here is my opinion, although it does not concern the question of master Jeff.
When I was a teen and young adult, I was known in my family as the "instigator". Being the youngest of 6 opinionated siblings and numerous close relatives, I took it as my job to instigate the arguments at various family gatherings. My family so loved to "discuss things" that they quickly forgot who actually started it and why. These arguments were seldom healthy. I grew out of this role once it was pointed out to me and have since forced myself to avoid taking it at family gatherings.
The world, and Taropatch, is filled with folks who relish a good argument and who find pleasure in instigating it and following along as it progresses. I still recognize my old self even if I choose to try and avoid it.
My opinion is that each of us should decide if we think this "instigator" style of personal interface is productive, healthy, and righteous or if we prefer to limit our responses to questions asked in the spirit of enlightenment.

Ah, yes...........Grasshopper........the odyssey and quest to be the instigatee of enlightment!!! One of the eternal mysteries of the universe.

Wow. Sounds so simple. This seems to be the REAL issue with the grammy winners. Can't really describe why I like slack key and not other hawaiian music any better than that. Hmmm, profound.

Aloha,

Well, when my dad told me "Son, you want to earn some extra bread?" and he let me play in his band, I knew I was getting there. Or maybe it was after my 50th recording......

If you want to know if you are a master, sit down and kanikapila with me and we can compare.......

It seems to some that the Maui show students who have only been playing a few years are Masters.......and Grammy winners although their names do not appear as winners or even nominees on the Grammy site.

for me...Jeff Petersen is Hawaiian and grew up on Maui where he learned slack key from his father and the other Paniolo. He is a fine guitar player and I really enjoy playing with him.

I think he is much better than some of those who get the title. He is also a wonderful composer of Hawaiian music.

Jeff also attended music school and has a college degree....although I am not sure he got a Masters.

I guess I am wondering who do you consider to be a master?

A hui hou, Cyril

Oh ya and Joni Mitchell did play slack key with me and Ledward Kaapana at MacCabes in 1970. They have a picture in the wall/hall of stars on that one.

Personally, I think the term "Master" of anything is somewhat over-the-top. Its equatable to people like Condolezza Rice (and others plagued by terminal insecurity) who insist on being called "doctor" because they've attained a Ph.D. degree, as if a Ph.D. from Cambridge, UH (Manoa) or some on-line university were all the same!

No, whether its applied to martial artists or Hawaiian slack key guitarists, brick-layers or brain surgeons, the term "Master" is unnecessarily braggadocious, and frankly, its contrary to the Hawaiian disposition. It denotes an almost Dalai Lama-like connotation of absolute "mastery' of something, and that's hyperbole, because NO ONE has "mastered" anything in this life.

By example, one of the finest, most accomplished and respected guitarists of all-time, regardless of your preferred musical genre or era, is (haole) singer/songwriter/guitarist Mark Knopfler (formerly of Dire Straits). As Chet Atkins' primary protege, he is considered by many (including Chet) to have become one of the top 2-3 guitarists in the history of guitar. His technique, his phrasing, his command of tonality with different instruments, and his incredible proficiency with the fretboard are second to none, yet when asked recently about his oft-perceived "mastery" of the guitar, he replied . . . "No, I'm afraid you can't 'master' the guitar. If you're a serious guitarist, then you're a student of the guitar your entire life."

And I doubt that Hawaii's more proficient and largely humble slack key guitarists are hurriedly claiming such titles on their own. Its more likely that their advertising and marketing brethren are the ones responsible for assigning them such lofty labels.

+1 to Rubbah Slippahs. A very good friend of mine who influenced me hugely in my outlook as a musician, once said "there's always someone worse, always someone better - no BEST". And isn't it funny how the true greats are usually so humble? John McLaughlin comes to mind, a quiet unassuming man who began his career with Miles Davis and went on from there (Miles launched a lot of "youngsters" that way).

If you aren't a student all your life, and I don't just mean of music, you may already be dead! ;)

It's never too late to have a happy childhood!
