Sex sells. Wayne's World fame still lingers. Beyond that, I really like her singing style. As for eating crow, I'm a hunter that eats what I take. The breasts of crow are edible and tasty:

Bottom line: our preferences in Hawaiian music are not those of the majority of people who voted in the Hawaiian category.

Hawaiian musicians somehow have to get name recognition. One would think Dennis Kamakahi would have name recognition. He wrote the Hawaiian lyrics for that Lilo & Stitch song about "I will love you Always". Ledward Kaapana has jammed with some of whom other folks consider among the best guitarists.

Marketing. I sure thought there was plenty marketing of Amy Hanali`i & the Slack Key Masters, but I guess marketing in Hawai`i is an absolute waste of money. It all has to be spent at the West Coast and New York.

OK, I am pau saying stuff this year before I get folks all rankled at me again.

but one more thing....Sonny Lim has my admiration. He is a consummate gentleman and a true man of aloha.

to me these awards are nice to honor artists, but it is hard to take any such things too seriously, music is so subjective, who is to say who is the best? what do you base it on? Sales ? popularity? technical skill? years of experience? One would think an overall avarage, but it never seems to be that way and tend more toward a recognition of marketing success as many have pointed out.

It reminds me a beauty pagent my daughter entered as a child. The winner was based soley on who sold the most adds for the pagent producers catalog book.

Most battle of bands - ticket sales contests
Music charts - album sales contests
guitar playing competitions - how fast you can play scales contests
etc.

My response to them winning - "Well, that's showbiz"! It's all about "sponsor's product" and noteriety.
