Received this email today. The success of the Hokule`a was the beginning of the Hawaiian cultural renaissance. Hope to see you there. -Admin
Aloha Kakou,
The Hawai`i Cultural Foundation is pleased to invite you to join us for an Informal Screening of a one-hour documentary film entitled: "Hokule`a - Guiding Star"
Sunday, June 23, 2002 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm American Indian Community House 404 Lafayette, 8th floor
Film Director, Leah Kihara and Producer and Hokule`a crew member, Na`alehu Anthony will speak about their experiences making the film.
Guiding Star takes viewers on board the canoe while under sail to reveal little-known aspects of the life of the voyagers. Hokule`a was launched 25 years ago, before some of the crew members on the voyage were born. Through the personal stories of Thompson, apprentice navigator Shantell Ching, veteran crew member Snake Ah Hee and novice crew members Na`alehu Anthony and Ka`iulani Murphy, the program takes a fascinating look at the preparation for the journey and the voyage itself. Guiding Starexplores crew selection, personal reasons crew members wanted to participate, the challenges the crew encountered, and the larger educational mission and inter-generational transmission of knowledge that provided the impetus for the voyage. Actual footage from the canoe as she approached Rapa Nui creates drama that allows viewers to share the emotions of the crew, a dramatic and inspiring moment.
Leah Kihara, a graduate from Kamehameha Schools and USC School of Cinema, makes her directorial debut with Guiding Star. Lurline McGregor, who is president and CEO of `Olelo Community Television, is the film's executive producer; Na`alehu Anthony is producer. Anthony, who recently won an `Iolani Broadcast Award for Excellence in Broadcasting for his first television series Ke Ala o Hokule`a, was also a Hokule`a crew member on this trip.
For more information, please feel free to contact us at 212-966-3378 or email us at hawaiiculturalfoundation @ hotmail.com.
Hope to see you there.

Just got back from watching a documentary on the Hokule`a and its journey to Rapa Nui and Tahiti. The Hokule`a is a canoe whose crew have navigated the Pacific to prove that the ancient Polynesians had the knowledge and ability to navigate. The common belief among historians had been that the islands of the Pacific had been discovered accidently.
One of the highlights was that the film featured master navigator Nainoa Thompson (also in the book Voices of Wisdom.) He had some really moving comments about mana and how the boat finds its way to its destination. He admits that he never would have said this years before, because he had not been brought up to believe in such things.
The one-hour film was very well done. The viewer really shares in the inspiration and emotions of the crew navigating the 6000 miles from Hawai`i to Rapa Nui. It's incredible that they could find Rapa Nui, truly a needle in a hay stack, using only the stars, ocean currents, winds to navigate. The Q&A session with Producer, Leah Kihara, and Hokule'a crew member, Na`alehu Anthony, was truly a treat. Thank you to the HCF crew who put this event together.
