Okay... I'm new to slack key and want to build a small library.
What three recordings (CDs or records if that's where the gold is hidden) MUST I get my greedy little hands on?

Aloha Peter, that's a tough call, only 3 CD's....
Among my favorites, (and I have many) are Gabby Pahinui's Rabbit Island Festival, Keola Beamer's Island Born, George Kahumoku's Drenched in Music, Sonny's Solo, Leward Ka'anapana's Solo, Gabby's anything, Dennis Kamakahi anything, yikes 
Gone to check my library....

CDs: Pure Gabby (Gabby Pahinui); Real Old Style (Keola Beamer); Punahele (Ray Kane).
Vinyl: Atta (Atta Isaacs); Leonard's Red (Leonard Kwan); Aunty Alice (Alice Namakelua).

Aloha Boojum!
Boy, that's like asking which child of yours is your favorite! Anyhow, when I started listening to slack key, I began with the Dancing Cat's Slack Key Masters and Collection series of different artists all on one cd to get a nice compilation of various styles and classic songs. From there, I explored different artists individually. Must haves: Classic/Old Style: anything by Ray Kane or Gabby Pahinui (both have some "best of" cds out), real nahenahe: Keola Beamer and John Keawe, get down and over-the-top (and my fave) anything by Led Ka'anapana. "Led Live" is a good one to hear him outside the studio and to truly appreciate his incredible talent and range. Good luck with choosing. I bet you won't get just 3! If you do, you are a very disciplined person (unlike me!).

Boy howdy on that! I heard Jeff at the Molokai Slack Key Festival and was completely blown away. I feel his recent CD is in the "must have" catagory... if you are interested in where slack key is headed, check this out. When I have a chance, I'll do a real review in the "recording" section.
Other essential CDs??
Anything with Gabby -- my fav is the duo album with Atta Isaacs. "Livin' on Easy." (?... sorry, no brain today.)
I'd also go with Ray Kane's "Punahele" -- and anything by Leonard Kwan. And.... you get the picture.

Slack Key Masters - Vol 1 (good mix)
Dennis Kamakahi: Ohana
Led Kaapana: Black Sand
Others to sneak onto the island (hey, you can stack them at least two high inside the jewel case!  )
Ray Kane: Punahele
Keola Beamer: Island Born
Cyril Pahinui: Night Moon |

There's a collection of great, traditional slack key recordings called "Slack-Key Tradition" Liko Hawaiian Folk Collection: Vol. Two, that would be one of my three desert-island CDs. It features Robert Keli'iho'omalu Jr., Elmer Lim, Gary Haleamau and Nolan Ha'o. All of these guys are some of the slack key world's best kept secrets.

Sadly, now out of print -- and Keoni Fujitani who owns the master, has no plans to reissue any of Liko's titles in the foreseeable future:

Just confirmed with the distributor (Booklines), that the CD is long out-of-print.
Their webmaster failed to remove it as instructed last year... |

Ah well..... Fortunately, I got my copy a while back. Also, along the same lines as Slack Key Tradition, is "Slack Key Guitar" with various artists http://www.mele.com/v3/info/1355.htm (beat you to it Auntie M.  ). This is also a GREAT collection. |
