HO'OKU'IKAHI: TO UNIFY AS ONE
Tuesday, July 23, 2002 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm American Indian Community House 404 Lafayette, 8th floor NY, NY
with Film Producer & Director, Meleanna Aluli Meyer
This compelling one-hour documentary captures powerful moments in Hawaiian history - past and present. It chronicles the internecine warring between big island districts of Ka`u and Kohala and the fulfilling of a prophecy that led Kamehameha the first to build a heiau, a temple of state to unify the Hawaiian islands. It's also about the death of Kamehameha's cousin the Ka`u chief Keouakuahu`ula, as it was this chief's life that was consecrated and offered at Pu`ukohola heiau two centuries ago. It was through commemorative events at this site in 1991 that invitations were extended to ka po`e Hawai`i - Hawaiians throughout the state, to come together as one at this sacred place - to reaffirm and reclaim ancestral ties, protocols and cultural practices that hadn't been used by many in 200 years. Polynesians also came from throughout the Pacific in a show of support.
Meleanna Aluli Meyer has played a significant role in three film/video project including the award winning documentary film Puamana, (1991), a 16mm film made with Les Blank chronicling her Aunt Irmgard Farden Aluli's life story, and Onipa'a (Associate producer, co-editing credit - 1995) a video documenting the observance ceremonies of the overthrow of Queen Lili`uokalani, and Ho`oku`ikahi. She is currently working on her 4th film - "THE WIDTH OF A BLADE OF PILI GRASS", a documentary on Queen Lili`uokalani's life and times as recounted through her music.
