Aloha - Well, since Chris didn't sing the words, it's hard to know. I do believe he's one of our "lurkers" so maybe we'll hear from him. As for Keola and camp, that seems like a good challenge! Enquiring minds Still want to know. mahalo! auntie n |

Aloha - last night's concert in Kent was the last one on the tour, and it was absolutely terrific. Sold out house, lots of laughter and great mana all around.
The guys had some really funny stories to tell about their experiences w/ the weather back east. John said they were going to rename this road trip the Ki Ho'alu Blizzard Tour.
Keola played virtually the entire concert using is classical instrument, so you can imagine it was very nahenahe.
It struck me that in listening to these men we were hearing three generations of slack key. Keola traditional (nothwithstanding his outrageous use of the entire instrument), John a little more contemporary (bending the last note about the nut), and Chris playing into the future w/ his own, very complex music.
Can hardly wait for camp.

Chris did play Puka Pants, at least at the Kirkland concert. He said it was a song from when Keola was into hiking, and on a long hiking trip he ended up with 'Puka Pants'.
Then with a devilish grin and a glance offstage, he played the song and gave no more clues.
The concert was wonderful...all three were very relaxed and in great spirits. Moana was beautiful as usual, and is starting to sing more (and sounds great!).
Chris played several songs from his CD and told stories making fun of himself for 'stalking' John Keawe to learn ki ho'alu. John played a great set, then an intermission where they both came out in the lobby to talk to the audience.
Then Keola and Moana did a long set, with Keola performing songs that spanned his entire catalog. He invited Chris out and they did several pieces from Keola's "Real Old Style" CD, with Chris doing the second guitar part of the duets (what an honor - to be invited by Keola to join him on the tour, and then to play with him as an equal!). John joined them (with Keola and Chris switching between the guitars in C tuning and those in F tuning, and John just using a capo), and then finally Donley and Moana on 'ukes.
A wonderful show, even if Donley did accidentally throw his microphone out into the audience.

Just wanted to mention...
That Donley appears to have done a PDG job as road manager!
It's a pity to do all that work just to play one tune on uke from behind a screen (at Roaring Camp) and then only one little chance to have a little fun throwing just one little mic at the audience!!
Thanks Donley, for perseverance at least, if nothing else!! |

Donley rocks as a road manager/roadie
He changed out all the guitars between sets for the different performers, made sure everything worked. When Keola invited Chris on-stage, all Chris had to do was sit down and put out his hand and a guitar magically appeared.
After the first set Donley set the stage for Keola, hustled out to the auditorium to sell CDs and work the crowd, back to the stage to double check everything...
The performers made jokes about Donley doing all the driving, and a whole lot of other things that helped make them relaxed and the show go off smoothly.
Maybe we have a new 'hardest working man in show business'
