I asked Daniel about it earlier this week after seeing it on his web site. This is what he said.

Thanks, Mike ele. This is what confused me:
"The six strings do not all have individual pitches since there are two double strings."
The reporter must have been referring to the high and low A strings.

I found the article to be a little confusing, too. I originally tuned the instrument to A-D-G-C-E-A, so it's in the same relative pitch as a guitar, but still a true ukulele. It's basically a tenor uke with two bass strings. Daniel re-tuned it to his Kilauea tuning, so he can play slack key with it.
If anybody has any questions about the construction, I'll be happy to answer them in this post.

I'm pretty sure he'll be bringing it with him. He's taken it with him everywhere, so far. We went out for lunch today and he brought the D-VI along.

I don't know....if it has 6 strings, all played separately, with no doubling of the four basic strings...isn't it more of a travel guitar than an 'ukulele? Even the 8-string has doubled sets, no individually played strings. excepting harp 'ukuleles which is a whole different kettle of fish..

The newspaper article was wrong. There are no doubled strings as in a traditional 6-string ukulele (See Kamaka web site for examples). In the interest of clarity, here is the picture from Daniel Ho's web site (www.danielho.com)

Hey Paul/Alan,
When can I order one? Have you fixed a price point yet? I assume Daniel's was custom for him with personal upgrades. Are your production run D-VI's going to have curly koa and purple heart as well? |

Hi Captain Mike,
We're targeting summer for the release of the production model, which should retail for under $1,000. The production line D-VI's will be based off of Daniel's but not exactly the same. In order to keep the cost down, features like the purple heart binding and curly koa will be reserved for custom orders.

The string spacing at the nut is 5/16, string center to string center.
