Thumb on the 3 lowest strings. Index finger can play the 4th string (D) in certain phrases, also when playing in "C" while in "G" tuning. Practice and timeing make it happen.

Yahoo! Ozzie's book/CD just arrived in the mail. I have a meeting tonight but I know what I'll be doing after it's over...

Thanks to everyone so much for the help. Now I have a lifetime of learning and fun ahead of me in ki ho'alu as well as 'ukulele! I'll keep you posted, if you like, as to how a true beginner really progresses (or doesn't!).
