Aloha, I had the good fortune to catch Auntie Genoa Keawe in Kaneohe August 2001, just after attending the first Keola Beamer Aloha Music Camp. I had to go out of my way to do it, and am I glad! I was already on a Hawaiian music high. I got to go to Camp, then the Slack Key Festival in Waikiki, and Auntie Genoa to top it all off. It was an outstanding evening. Can't remember the name of the show, but it included Frank Hewett. (sp?) She was delightful, and I waited around to talk to her afterward. If you can go see her, do it. She is now gray and walking with a cane, but her voice is just as fantastic as ever. A gem. Catch her while you can! Love, Julie |

Hi Julie, She is a gem, indeed. I went over to Waikiki after George's June workshop at napili, to the Waikiki Beach Marriott, where she plays each Thursday evening. She played with Daniel(?) Akaka, slide guitar, another aunty whose name I've forgotten on Uke, and her son on bass. She had numerous guests too. A Japanese Uke player who is apparently pretty famous in Japan(he told me his name translated to 'cool rain', I think, and a woman singer who was the first to popularize hawai'ian singing in Japan. It was a fun night, but you gotta' watch those bar tabs!
btw; have you heard the Ho'op'i brothers CD, where Ledward is jamming along, and Aunty says "that's enough now Ledward!". It's hilarious, and captured on the CD. the CD is "Ho'omau-to Perpetuate.
