Mahalo Dusty!
I know not all will be able to be with their loved ones as they are spread around the world, but I wish you peace in your hearts and music in your soul.

Dusty,
Are those grape leaves from your vineyard? When do you need to prune back for next year's crush? Have a Happy Thanksgiving to you as well!

Yes. They are Cabernet Franc leaves, at the top of the vineyard.

I prune after the vines go dormant, usually in January or February.

Dusty,

Looks like you might have leaf-roll virus.

No huhu - just kidding!

We'll have to get together and play - tomorrow is the last day of crush for me.

Nice pic Dusty. Also nice to know they are Cab Franc. Sarah and I had a *wonderful* (aromatic berries, not vegetal), and *cheap* Loire CF when we had dinner with Andy in a French restaurant before a Led concert in NYC 2 years ago. I have been trying to duplicate that wine ever since. It is no surprise that Bordeaux blends use CF for aroma. For Thanksgiving, I bought a middling (but more expensive than I like) 2003 Chinon, but I think it is too young, according to reviews. Any suggestions (you could sugggest your own)?

Reid,

I'm partial to zinfandel and Norman Vineyards in Paso Robles has some of the best. I also like their Cabernet Sauvignon and Meritage.

How's that for a plug, Steve?

Aloha Steve!
I hope you make it to MB on the 28th (dec). I am thinking Dusty and Shiela will make it up here.
Reid, are you growing your own grapes? How do they do where you are?

Dusty (and Steve),

I have one bottle of the 1984 Lytton Springs hill sub-vinyard Zin (orange label) that I have been holding out as an experiment. Sarah and I got a case or two when Sherman the Ad Man was the owner, before he retired and sold out to Paul and Ridge's Japanese owner(s). That is going to be drunk (if it is still not vinegar - it should be like Port) with a good blue cheese on Thanksgiving. So, I like zin, too, Lots (and I had a bunch of Helen Turley's stuff, too - before she became famous; also all of Ridge's, Cline's and Ravenswood's).

However, I have developed what some people would call an anti-
wino's revenge: I get migraines from aged wines. It literally kills me in several ways, since I had (I sold off a bunch) a glorious cellar, bought cheap on futures. Still have some, though, which I sip.

So, I am always looking for light fragrant fruity reds (last coup was the '90 Beaunes). That's why good Cab Franc is high on my list.

And, Nancy, I don't grow anything but mold :-). But this area is actually lots like Bordeau, and should produce great wine, but our last Fall tour of the North Fork of Long Island proved that they only can do whites well - and McMansions (wineries are selling out to real estate developers Big Time). I was so disappointed in their Cab Franc; Cabs were green and herbaceous and acidic.

Guys, I'll trade some Beaucastel CNdP, Leoville Barton and some other Super Seconds for appropriate juice. 1982 - 1990.

Reid & Dusty,

I'm not sure where Valley Center is compared to Temecula, but SD County is one of the premier wine-growing regions in the world. A friend, Leon Santoro, runs Orfila Winery there.

I hope to make it down Christmas week. I will also be in New York in early February, trying to sweet-talk Opici to distributing our wine. (I always think of Opihi!)

Great news! My wife and I are celebrating our 30th anniversary in April: 4 days in Kihei and 2 in Poipu. I'll certainly be checking the listings for concerts then!

A few years ago I did a wine dinner at Sam Choy's. Next time, I'll bring my Taylor. Can you dig it?

I love a good wine. At least up until my wife tells me to quit the incessant complaining.

Happy Thanksgiving to all! We're roasting a giraffe this year, because giraffes dont fly!

I also like my reds with good fruit and not too old. I prefer zins around 2 years from the vintage date. We have a collection of BV cabs from 1968-1971 (mostly the private reserves) and while still great they don't last long after they are opened.

Valley Center is about a half hour south of Temecula - quite close. However we don't have mountains between us and the ocean as Temecula does. So we get more of the ocean influence.

Dusty,

Great to have an expert here on the subject.

I still have '82s in my collection. Takes a while to air them out but they STILL are fantastic. I have been waiting for the "next 82" ever since. I have heard rumors that 03 might be it. I have tasted several 03s and they do appear to be quite good. Is this just a rumor or is there something to it. I am ready to stock up. Got any suggestions for other years?

Mike

We haven't had much BV private reserve since Andre Tchelistcheff left. It's too pricey. We got our collection when the BV Rutherford sold for $3.95 and the private reserve was $5.95.

Besides Norman, we like Meeker (Gyserville), Everett Ridge (Healdsburg), Castoro (Paso Robles), Justin (also in Paso), Latchum and Granite Springs (Sierra foothills) and Ridge zins. Hart Winery down here in Temecula makes some excellent reds.
