I think there are a fair number of slack key players and enthusiasts in the San Francisco Bay Area. Are there enough of us who are interested in getting together regularly to form a Slack Key Society in the region? I know one of our problems is a pretty wide geographic dispersal, ranging from Santa Cruz to Sebastapol.
If you're interested, I've set up an email account to collect responses:
XXXsfbayslacker @ yahoo.comXXX
I can't imagine why I thought it was a good idea to create a new email address for this. Please use my real email address:
fguidry @ yahoo.com
so I don't miss any messages, and shoot me an email if you'd like to be involved.

Fran, I want to support getting together to play.
I'm very wary about forming a "society." -- Bad experience wit a few of them. Best case in point -- Haiku Poets of Northern California, a branch of Haiku Society of America. I was one of the first 4 founding members -- first meeting held in my house. Lofty goals -- support each other, advance the art form. By the third meeting we had 25 members. -- And then the crap started. Different people had different opinions of what American haiku should be -- and in their opinion they are absolutely right and everyone else was wrong. On top of that personality stuff started to get in. Then a big dose of jealousy -- onew of the people was chosen to represent US in Japan (not me -- but in my opinion the best poet of the group was chosen) --
So much hard feelings, petty crap --- My last statement to the group was something on the order of, "Hey folks, let's face it, haiku is a small artform which we love, and lots of others love, but it's not going to impact culture as, for example, Shakespeare, Brecht, etc. --- and this group has completely lost both perspective and a sense of brotherhood serving something larger than our egos, namely our art."
I've seen this happen a couple of times with different groups. I don't want to come near anything like that again. Life is too short.
So, Ki ho'alu is never going to have the impact of Mozart, Stravinsky, and the rest of those guys. Nor does it have to. I'm happy playing on my version of the "old porch" -- for my pleasure and anyone else who wants to listen. I'm happy to get together with others to share and maybe play together. But please, no membership cards.

Raymond, I've seen as much bad group behavior as I need. I have concerns similar to yours, but playing together is such fun that it's worth a little risk.
I've talked to a couple of people, and we seem to have similar ideas. My first proposal would be a rotating get together, because I think of the SF Bay Area as extending from Santa Cruz to Santa Rosa, or further. By gathering in different locations, we'd share the driving.
I also think, in view of the pace of most people's lives, that every other month (is that bimonthly or semimonthly?? <g>) would be about the right schedule.
Also, I have a little space on a website where we could hang a few pictures or something.

I'm just glad to see people getting together to play. It doesn't really matter what you call it as long as it's fun.
I look forward to seeing some pics of the good times. |

Good Idea,
A few of us here on the mid-penninsula have gotten together a number of times for kanikapila and we had discussed making the meetings more regular, but it never happened. Ed & Helen bought a house in Hawaii and were gone a lot of the time. John hurt his hand and is not playing as much. There were problems trying to co-ordinate day of week to meet, etc, etc. But we sure still like to get together with a moderate sized group and kani!
Based on experiences of many such kani I would suggest a few simple rules:
1) Everyone gets to Play: In other words everyone (who wants to) gets to lead a number snd each person leads only one number and lets another take the next. This way the maximum number of people have a chance to lead at least one number. Sometimes in these gatherings one or two people will dominate and "hold-forth" and others may not have a chance to lead, causing ill feelings. The kani's that work best (IMHO) use rotation of the lead in a circle fashion around the group to solve this problem.
2) Everyone gets to Learn:
If a player is un-familiar with a number then the group will walk thru it with them (at least for the first few verses). Other ways of learning should be encouraged as well.
These simple considerations will go a long way to help prevent the kind of ill feelings that Raymond was talking about.
So we would certainly be interested in helping to form this group.
Bi-Monthly sounds reasonable, given the distances involved.
Rotating locations seems to be fair. Maybe a central location could be determined at some later point.
The next question is what day of week?

Fran, I forgot I have to be in Chicago on the 18th (for court regarding my father's estate - Now if someone were psychologically minded they might wonder about why I put that date out of my mind.) -- I'll by in Chi 10/17 - 10/23. I really would like to make it, but if no other date works, I guess I'll catch the secobd round.
By the way, I spoke with Sonny Wagner, a friend/local Hawaiian into slack key (but not on line yet.) Sonny said he could make most Saturdays, but other days of the week would be hard 'cause he works 6 days a week.
Also --- I'm willing to travel. I'm also willing to host -- have a great backyard which can easily accomodate up to 15 people. Fran - you've been over, so I'll leave it to your judgement as to where we meet. Raymond |

Folks,
Right now we (Cynthia and I) need our weekends for home improvement projects we are working on. Probably the most available time is Friday evenings, but travelling on Friday evenings is a disaster in the Bay Area. The next most available time is Monday Evenings.

Actually, once we get this home project done, Saturday mornings would probably be the best time for us too, since the traffic situation is so awfull on workdays. But it will be at least a few weeks before the next open Saturday occurs.

Hi I'm new to the taropatch and would be very interested in getting together in the SF bay area. I live in Sebastopol so midway between Seb. & Santa Cruz seems reasonable. I've been playing guitar for ~ 40 years, listening to slack key for 30 and new to playing slack key. Lot's of ohana in hawaii. Love to experience the spirit of aloha locally, without a plane ride.

David! Give me a call, we're neighbors! There's a guy named Mike in Santa Rosa too who's played guitar for years, slack key for a while. I'm pretty wet behind the ears,
