Winery gigs are the best. I'm sure you'll be inundated with replies. Mine's already been sent. What's a ten-hour drive between friends?
I play regularly for wine club releases at two Applegate Valley wineries here in Southern Oregon- next ones are May 13th and June 2. Slack key seems to really go well with sniffing, tasting and nibbling. (Do I detect a hint of pineapple in the nose?)
And yes, I've been known to play "Tiny Bubbles" when requested... hey, the song's about wine after all.
cheers!

We're Norman wine club members, so there's even more reason to go. |

quote: We pay competitive rates and wine connossieurs are generally good tippers.
Sorry to rain on every one's parade, but I have to chime in here on a disturbing trend.
A guy posts a note offerring a legitimate, paying gig -- the kind that working musicians rely on to put food on the table. And the next thing that happens is a crowd of non-professional musicians jump all over it, in effect saying: "Hey, no need to pay the pros, we'll do it for free. We'll bring all our friends, we'll play for beer (wine, food, whatever). It's a party!!!!!"
OK, so what's wrong with this? Just that every time you take a gig like that, you are taking work that someone else may need.
Case in point: Where I live countless local bars found that they could stop hiring musicians on weekends because all they had to do was host weekly jam sessions and Open Mics. Instead of shelling out a few hundred bucks a night on the weekends, they simply offer a space and, once in a while, a few bucks in "free" beer. They actually make money, because the regulars that show up week after week actually pay (through food and beverage purchases) for the privilege providing entertainment for the club's customers.
Why pay when you can get it for free???
OK, so am I anti-open mic? Not at all. They have their place: they are a great way to develop your craft, and they can be a good place for the audience to hear something new. The best ones are held on off nights and can serve as a proving ground for new talent, who'll eventually move up to a paid weekend slot.
Nor am I anti-jam session. I'm a jamming fool, and I try to make an old time session in Ashland every chance I get. I should note that the session is held in the afternoon, and the club continues to book live music all weekend. I stoutly refuse to particpate in open mics that have suplanted a paid night somewhere. Karaoke is right out.
But I would never, ever offer to play for free (or barter) if the gig could go to someone who might need the income.
I realize I may piss some people off for writing this. It is not intended as a personal attack on anyone. Some guys saw the post, and took it as an opportunity to have some fun.
Rather I just want you to think about it.
If you want to play a gig, bid for it at competitive rates. Don't say "hey, I'm not in this for the money, so I can do it for nothing." That's taking a wage out of someone's pocket.
Or, worse, "I'm really not that good, so I'll do it for free." If you ain't got the confidence that you are good enough to be paid a working wage, then maybe you need to spend some more time in the woodshed before you play out.
I'm really not a money grubbing bastid. Nor am I all that grumpy (well, maybe I am.) I've just been down this road so many times before - so it hurts to see it come up again here on the Taro Patch. And yes, I did send a press kit and bio to Steve in hopes that he would hire me. So sure, there's a little self interest at play here.
But that's not the issue. I'm a charter member of Hey Rube!, a late and lamented national folk musican's cooperative. We are all in this togther. (I've always wondered why this sort of thing doesn't happen in other professions: "Hey, I like teeth, so I'll do your dentistry for free....")
I know every one here truly loves the music, and honestly respects and honors those who have made it happen. Just remember, if musicians couldn't make a go of it, our lives would be a lot poorer.
End of sermon. |

Mark, Never thought of it that way! Point well taken and will keep that in mind in the future. Your talents and teaching materials in particular are "instrumental" (pun intended) in my ki ho'alu abilities. It would not be wise to bite the hand that feeds me. |
