On Thursday July 27, Gayle's Perks coffee shop will include one hour of slack-key featured artists, John Neira and Dan Hofstedt (me) from 8-9 pm. We'll each play a few solo and a few together. It is part of an open mic night which includes sign-up players from 7-8 and then 9-10 on either side of the featured act. The stage is in an outdoor covered patio area. Sign-ups for the open mic are at 6:45. They have a $4 minimum, so a smoothie or a specialty coffee will cover that. They also have some snacks and juices to choose from. One minor drawback: they allow smoking on the patio, which can blow away if there's a breeze, but if you are extra sensitive to that then I just wanted to give a head's up... Location is in North Hills in the northern San Fernando Valley, corner of Balboa and Nordhoff in the Albertson's shopping center. Address and phone number: 9082 Balboa Blvd, Northridge, CA 818-893-6507; http://www.gaylesperks.com

Moloka'i is on the horizon, and I dunno if I'll wanna leave once I get there, but when I do get back I know I'll wanna keep playin'... Question for you, Dog/Doc, do you take your "good" guitar? I know ALL your guitars are good, but do you recommend just taking a travel guitar or a "beater?" Whatchoo t'ink, brah?

Dan,

I usually travel with my 314 Taylor (the one I played with you in Lodi last year). Like most lower-end Taylors it's a tank, but has a beautiful sound. I pack it very tightly in it's case, then I put the case in a padded case-cover. So far so good. You'll see all manner of guitar at camp, beaters to Goodalls. Go with what your comfortable with. Make sure you keep a good eye on it at Moloka`i baggage.

Have a great gig. See you in a week and a half.

Dave
