LandezaPresents more Hawaiian Slack Key Music for all to enjoy, hope to see you at the show!

Kevin Brown, the father, performs along side with some of Hawaii’s top musicians. A former member of the 1970’s Hawaiian renaissance group “The Waiehu Sons”, Kevin has shared his love and dedication of music with his family. As a slack key teacher at Baldwin High School on Maui, he continues to carry on the rich traditions that were taught to him as a child. Kevin currently is a feature instructor at various Hawaiian music camps throughout the islands. www.slackkey.net

Ikaika Brown was 12 years old in 1996 when he recorded his first album “Kalo Man” which was nominated for two HOKU’s (Hawaii’s Grammy award). In 2000, Ikaika along with his grandfather won the coveted HOKU award for best Haku Mele. Now at 21, he continues his family’s tradition and performs along side his father. Aloha kakou,

This is just a quick plug to suggest to taropatchers that they add Sonoma State University's Sept 7 Noon Concert to their Ohana Brown/Patrick Landeza plans. This is a lovely spot for a daytime concert, and if you take Rohnert Park Expressway east to SSU's north entrance, there is plenty of parking. Bring a couple of dollars worth of quarters to buy a pass. Main campus is due south from there.

SSU doesn't pay a lot, and the musicians agreed to do this performance for the benefit of the students. It will be a great place to buy another couple of CDs to show support for their generosity. The usual Sonoma County slackheads will be there (yeah, both of 'em) but it's a big area, so a'ole pilikia for seating.

Tasty tacos are available at the Commons, just north of the Main Quad. Good weather guaranteed.

Thanks Patrick, Suzie, Kevin and Ikaika, see you there

In case you're wondering if you should make an extra effort to see Ohana Brown while they're doing their mini-tour of Northern Cali, let me tell you a little story about the first stop on the tour.

Patrick Landeza http://www.patricklandeza.com called up two weeks ago and asked a favor - he needed a "road manager" (read
"chauffeur") for the Ohana Brown http://www.slackkey.net/AboutOhanaBrown.html tour. I had to push some other plans, but I'm a huge fan of the Browns and the thought of hours of "talk story" hooked me right in.

So Sunday I woke at 4 AM to pick up the Browns and their 2006 Pathfinder (loaned by a friend/fan) in Los Altos at 6 AM so we could meet Patrick in Hayward at 7 AM so we could hit the road for Garberville and the 9th annual Benbow Lu`au. And I was so right about the stories. I brought some CDs of vintage slack key and Hawaiian music and each new track would bring comments from Kevin, about the style, or the artist, or the song. It was the kind of education I've been craving for years, and the time just flew by.

Traffic was light (and some people have suggested that my foot is heavy) so we got to the Benbow Lake Recreation Area in plenty of time. Kevin and Ikaika had dressed for coastal weather in long pants and long sleeves, but we were far enough inland that the weather was good and hot, so we headed into Garberville for shorts and slippahs. The pickings were slim and the
Browns were appalled at $40 designer slippahs, so while Ikaika searched one store Kevin walked the streets looking for an alternative. I had to decide between busting out a book or busting out a guitar ... hmmmmmm.

I pulled out Patrick's guitar, leaned against the wall in front of the store and started slacking around. Pretty soon Ikaika comes out, we pass the guitar back and forth, he decides to bust out his guitar. You know playing with this guy is a thrill. He's smooth, and hot, knows about 735,114 songs, can play anything he hears, and has a unique style that's a perfect amalgam of his dad's rich traditionalism and a 20-something's pop influences. I'm in heaven.

Then Kevin comes back from his walking tour of Garberville (took 8 minutes or so) and now we're passing the guitar again, so we've got a revolving duet. I don't know whether it's better to be playing with one of these masters, or listening to the two of them. They play together like one heart with four hands, just a constantly evolving flow of complementary parts. Kevin pulls out an old song he's never shown Ikaika but they sound like they've rehearsed it forever, it's as seamless as the tunes they've practiced for the show. Ikaika follows his dad into an elaborate ending and I ask him how he knew they were winding up, I didn't see any knod or eye contact or shrug like we mortals use to communicate during performance - he says they've played together so long he can tell by his dad's breathing, his touch on the strings, his note choice, that they're doing a last chorus and winding
up. To the listener, it's just magic.

The store owner comes out about then to bring us the bench they use for trying on shoes, more comfortable than leaning against the wall, and we play on. We have a fluid audience of Sunday stolling shoppers, some of them get caught in the web of notes and hang around for two or three songs, some stroll by then come back and come back again. We're starting to get hungry, but our current audience of one is deeply enthralled, so we keep going "just one more" until we start to worry about missing out on the laulau and kalua pig back at the lu`au. Kevin and I do one last tune, "Isa Lei," and pack up. While we're putting the guitars away Kevin says that playing on stage is good, and making recordings is good, but the real thing is just pulling out the guitars and bringing the music to life, no pickups or microphones or expectations. After this experience, I certainly agree.

On the way back to the site Kevin told a story brought to mind by the owner bringing us a bench: He was friends with the late legendary composer/guitarist Leonard Kwan, who was born and grew up on Maui out Hana way. On one visit Leonard suggested they go visit his childhood, so they headed out the Hana highway, to the country neighborhood where Leanord was raised. They stopped at the old country store and the owner asked where they're from, soon the story was out that they're visiting a childhood home, and Leonard is identified. The owner was thrilled and asked for a picture, then asked if they'd brought guitars, and if she could do a video of them playing a tune. These guys never travelled far from their guitars, so they bring `em out and sit on the old bench in front of the store, next to the hitching rail, to play some of Leonard's signature instrumentals while the owner's husband videotaped.

As they packed up to leave, the owner tells them that the bench they had sat on was over a hundred years old, had been there when the original paniolos had ridden down the slopes of Haleakala, tied their horses to that hitching rail, and sat on that bench and played their slack key guitars back when the style was just being born. I get the chicken skin just writing it down.

Back at the Benbow Recreation Area we had ono lunch listening to Mike and Mark, then the smooth Kalapakiko quartet hit the main stage and kicked things off. After they set the mood, the Browns took us to the next level with their sweet ohana sound. They just knocked us all over. The audience was in the palms of their hands, and that was a wonderful place to be.

Yep, It was a magic day at Benbow Lake. I missed the Garberville kani kapila, cuz I was rehearsing with Hui Arago. What a treat! Thanks for letting me sit in.

I think Fran should get mvp -- not only did he do all the driving, but I saw him schlep guitars & all the usual roady stuff... anytime I tunred around, he was handing out a nice cold bottle of water.

Next time you get up on that stage, Fran!

You could not want a more beautiful location or nicer people. Eating ono food on a hot summer day--nice. Listening to great music with a backdrop of Benbow Lake and the redwoods -- very nice. Watching Patrick drive off with two boxes of laulau strapped to the roof of the van...priceless.

If any of you guys haven't seen Kevin & Ikaika perform -- do not miss this tour.

Mahalo to Patrick, `ohana Brown, The Kapalakiko Band, Hui Arago, Peter Strickland & KMUD for a great weekend.

Just got back from the Kamakahi and Brown "Father & Sons" concert in Redwood City and I am still wired. It was an incredible treat--each family was great as a duo, with Uncle Kevin and Ikaika opening the show and Uncle Dennis and David following.

As great as each family was as a duo, the last hour was simply magical, when all four took the stage and played kanikapila style. Each person took a song or two and the rest joined in with beautiful harmonies and awesome pa'anis passed around (including harmonica)--all unrehearsed, yet so unbelievably tight. Lots of great stories too.

It's in the wee hours right now, so I'll leave the details to the many other Taropatchers who were in attendance. I'm just glad I got to experience this historic event. Mahalo for putting this together Patrick!

Aloha,

Doug

Yes- an excellent concert. While standing in the large line of folks waiting for admission into the theatre, I stated that I did not need to watch the fingers this time (so I did not need to sit so close). Before the night was over, I was not able to stop myself from craning my neck to see quite a few of the "riffs".

It was especially nice that the combined group of four did a lot more than the usual one or two relatively common songs together. Ikaika was a little bit kolohe, tricking Dennis about what song was actually starting. It was funny to watch Dennis change his harmonicas three times in rapid succession, while continuing to strum.

Thanks Patrick, for bringing these guys out.

Hey, Chris, long time. I was at your first show back in the old school house in Pleasant Hill. Ask Brenda about our guitar party, too.
