For all those who attended the concert at the Attic in Santa Cruz on September 24, I need to explain something and also publicly apologize to the opening artist, 'Ilio Nui.
Somehow, we ended up decorating the stage during what I thought was sound-check, but actually turned into 'Ilio Nui's (Kawiks) set. We arrived at the venue a little after 11 AM and I had read on the bill that the concert would start at 12. So, with the understanding that we were still under the time limit, we started setting up the decorations.
There was a lot of activity with the sound man and the setting up of equipment. Kawiks was on stage, and as it was rather noisy in the hall with people coming and going, lunch being served, I did not actually hear the emcee later introducing Kawiks. We were still fussing on and off stage, and I did not realize that the concert had started earlier than expected.
I'm afraid we really offended our dear friend and for that I am truly, deeply sorry. I know how important performing is to us musicians. I will never, never make such a mistake again. To the audience that day, I offer my apologies, and to Kawiks, one very important person in my musical world, and whom I love dearly, I remorsefully apologize again for my horrific blunder.
Boy, do I feel dumb...

Aloha Julie...Its so nice to hear how much aloha you have and the aloha that you give. Braddah Dave is an awesome guy whom I had the pleasure of meeting at the concert. He too is another example of what aloha really means...i'm sure he would take this all in stride. He's an awesome Ki Ho`alu player and basically an all around great guy!!!

Your open letter is very gracious and da kine pono. All is forgiven to you, Larry and your weekend guest who not only walked in front of me on stage, but even bumped into me while playing. I must admit I was pretty tweaked for a while. It was a big gig for me. But you are correct, the show was supposed to start at noon and things were a little hectic. Since I was the first on, I was the last sound check and with a small intro from the emcee, I began playing at about 11:30.
You and I go way back and we have too much Aloha for each other to let this mean anything. Mahalo.
As an aside, there have been a couple threads over the last couple years about what it takes to perform. Lots of good input about breathing, visualization, etc. Don't ever underestimate the power of anger channeled in the right direction. That's the best I've played on stage in a long time. It reminded me of trying to play over the rain, in a quonset hut called "The Rainbow Room" at Kalani Honua, during the AMC Student concert. Of course, that night, the rain won.
Keali`i. Mahalo for the kind words. I really enjoyed our short visit outside during the show. Your set was outrageous. What a talent. I was honored to share the same stage with you, Steve, Huna Wai, and Darlene. Me hawai`i mai loko mai.

Weekend guest hoped you'd remember her name - - I also apologize - I too thought the concert started at noon - no other word received.
I am so sorry if I bumped into you, especially if I missed apologizing - I did give you a pat on the shoulder to say hi. And tried to stay out of your way - but with all the equipment and stuff laying around - well, was trying not to trip and break it.
So once again, I am very sorry......

Ok everybody this is all fabricated... Its called FREE PUBLICITY! So we will be seeing you all at next years show! (thanks you guys for helping me out!)
Just joking guys... Hey just to let everyone know. Showtime was to begin at 12pm. We had started a little early because I wanted Dave to play LONGER! Since he rips so hard! Originally it was supposed to be just 15 or so minutes. 3-4 songs, but turned out he played a little longer. These things happen...
Dave you played wonderful. In fact I was saying to myself as all the things were happening, people flowing in, food being served and friends helping set up... MAN he looks so confident and sounds so...ONO! Great Job cuz!
Mahalo to you all again and a BIG MAHALO goes out to JULIE HENDRICKS and her husband LARRY for ALL of their Pa'akikihana (hard work) just about EVERY show here in SANTA CRUZ. They lug those plants sometimes up and down stairs, thru hallways and finally to the stage where it presents an image that looks and feels like your in PARADISE! I love the Sarong that hangs over the Bamboo partition... Keeps your mind wondering huh? Great Job to you guys! And I am sorry I didn't get to mention you folks!

Keali'i and Big Dog... You guys gotta stop meeting like that. Outside with your "friends"...I vote we raise the taxes on them again and again! (inside joke). What you need is some... DEATH SPRAY! OOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOO!!! We are friends... Hey hey Friends...
No for real we look forward to next years show which will be even better. (if thats possible!)

Do we remember THAT night! We have a video of it that I think Lynette took. Andy's piece *really* got clobbered by the downpour, too. Was like being inside a drum. All you hear on the soundtrack is muffled music and badangbadang. But then, you had that wonderful suggestive painting off stage left to look at :-)
Earlier players caught a break, but you guys got creamed.

You're killing me here! I can still picture that painting! And yes, we heard lots of rain but also got to watch that big rat run back and forth across the rafters. Sigh, do we miss that "Rainbow Room"?
Still, the first time over there was magic, wasn't it?

Ah, the gentle rain blowing into Hale 2 as we are all eating lunch. Someone decides to draw the rain screens which causes a shower of thousands of Cockroaches. Well, we did need a little protein with all that Tofu.... There wasn't anything "suggestive" about that painting at all. It was right to the "point".... I can still close my eyes am picture Richard's modern dance interpretation of Ku`u Home o Kahalu`u while Chris gently played.
Yes it was magical. That was my initial journey into Slack Key. I met so many wonderful people, many of which, like you guys, are still friends today. Kalani Honua was a great place to start. It certainly is not Kaupoa, but I'm still greatful for the experience. Mahalo to the Beamer and Nelson `ohana for starting it all.

Although I wasn't at the camp mentioned here, I seem to remember some sort of big dog in the adjacent room to ours in 2002.  |

In the room adjacent to ours in 2001(rejected, on reasonable grounds, by Lawrence and Cynthia the day before :-), there was, at night, what Sarah and I thought was a wild pua`a. Turned out it was George K snoring. What a blast - nearly took down the paper-thin wall! And the room above ours was subject to a centipede smashing at 3:00AM (by Mark) which was answered in call-and-response style by Keoki whacking the ceiling with a broom in the other room adjacent to ours. Must have been lots of phytohormones in all that tofu.
Ah, those were the days...
(Funny how you can look back at stuff like that from a certain distance and laugh at it.)

There is another thing that is so obvious to me since my hands failed me and I am looking from the outside in. All of you were pretty good living room guitarists and `ukulele-ists (if that's a word) then, 5 1/2 years ago in Puna. But now, all of you, who have hung in, are *exceptional*. You are performing, singing and understanding Hawaiian, arranging, composing, making CDs, winning prizes, leading song circles at camp (and singing dozens of memorized songs in very high pitches - sorry, couldn't stop my Devil:-). Not only the regulars here, but Chris and Duke and all the rest who occasionally pop in. Most of you(including Sarah and Andy) have lost your amateur status and people are paying to hear you. Nobody is quitting their day jobs, but there is nothing like some tangible return to prove worth. And every day you are all getting even better at this broad and deep art form.
Quite amazing and *very* enjoyable.
