I currently live in the town of York, Maine. I was born in Boston, Massachusetts on Lei Day, 1991. I have been blind since birth, but that doesn't matter to me at all. I love to sing, play the piano, write, surf, listen to music, and study languages. I also love hanging out with family and friends and meeting all different types of people. Want to wala'au with me? How did you become interested in Hawaiian music all the way over there on the east coast? Do you play any Hawaiian music?

It all started about three years ago. My 'ohana and I had gone on a vacation to Florida, and while we were there, I had been in the process of writing a fiction story in which one of the characters was from Honolulu. It was at this time that I started wanting to find out about the Hawaiian culture and everything related to Hawai`i Nei.
The Hawaiian music I had first listened to was actually hapa haole because my tutu who is originally from Germany bought a hapa haole CD for me. For about a year, I had thought that that was actual Hawaiian music. When I had heard about Keali'i Reichel from watching the Travel Channel, I thought I'd go on the Internet and look him up. I found a site that had some songs of his that I could listen to. The first one I heard was "Melelana," and I didn't really like it that much. A few weeks after that, however, I went back to my computer and listened to that one, as well as "Every Road Leads Back to You," and it was at this time that I loved those songs.
And so it was. That same year, my 'ohana and I went to Hawai`i and I ended up buying all of Keali'i's CD's. Since then, he has become one of my favorite Hawaiian artists, along with Iz, Na Palapalai, Raiatea Helm, the Brothers Cazimero and many others.
As for playing Hawaiian music, I can play and sing a whole bunch of mele, from "Maunaleo," "E O Mai" and other Keali'i songs to "Mele Kalikimaka" and a couple other hapa haole ones. |

Aloha & welcome to the TP Alex!! I'm originally from Clinton, Mass. Just outside of Worcester, all my family is still there. Not too many Puerto Ricans from Boston who play Slack. ha-ha.

Hey Rik.
I lived in Shrewsbury, MA in the 60s. Used to go to Spag's for all kine good stuff. I learned to swim in Lake Quinsigamond and studied drawing at the Worcester Metropolitan Museum of Art. Not too many Red Sox fan Scots that play slack key!

We're done with most of our shows for the rest of the holiday season, though we have one more on Dec. 30 at the Seattle Center. After the first of the year, when classes resume, I know that the haumana are concentrating on ho`ike plans for sometime in May - so I'll have a lot of new songs to learn. Our kumu is working with another halau these days, getting them back on their feet, so the alaka`i are teaching most of the classes and I've become the primary rehearsal musician. It's helped me to really get stronger with singing the songs in Hawaiian. |

WOW Mike!! you remember Spag's, man that was the coolest store ever, always crowded...you could anything at Spag's!! That sure brings back good memories. Do you remember Whalom Park?

Never been to Whalom Park (that I remember).
We used to drive to RI and go to Crescent Park in Riverside. My grandparents lived two blocks away. |
