Does that not then make them "Semi-Pro" ?
I would disagree with this statement, both legally and philosophically.

LEGALLY:

1) In the U.S. you qualify as a professional Musician for the I.R.S. if you make at least $600 from paid gigs each year.

2) There is no law that states that you can only have ONE profession and that any profession you have must be a full-time job. Example: Cher or Madonna, both of whom have made LOTS and LOTS of money as Musicians AND as Actresses (and neither was full time).

And of course there are some people who are professionals of even more that two "trades"!!

PHILOSOPHICALLY:

It is a matter of training (if your skills are as good as peer professinals, AND attitude (if you consider your other profession seriously and have a "professional" attitude about it).

E lawrence. Thanks for the info. I read semi-pro as alittle tongue in cheek joke. In fact almost all musicians still have a day job. Ingano works at Tamashiro market et. cetera. Some people go full time like K. Beamer , the Cazimeros and so forth. I n Hawai'i most peole consider pros as those who have recorded and play on a stage for more than two people for more than 5 dollars. Gabby worked for the city and county along with Atta Isaacs. These guys were true treasurez in Hawaiian music. I'm sure that they paid taxes to both the state and the Federal gov'ts. I n Hawai'i you have to have a state business license which is also given an excise tax number. That means you pay tax twice. Once as a business than as an individual. So Pro as a taxable business and pro as skill level are different things with different meanings. I think if you are good enough to put on a show and sell tickets and people other than family and friends buy a ticket then you are a pro. Or if you get someone to finance a recording and you actually make money on it you are not only a pro but a recording artist. Me I was lucky enough to have spent some time as a professional newspaper delivery person now retired.

Yeah - probably I was too serious with the answer. Basil Needed to put a smiley in there to make it clear.
But of course it IS funny that the IRS thinks that $600 is a professional salary for a Musician!

Now in Hawai... $5 and an audience of two will do? R.O.T.F.L.

My last gig, I lost money. I worked strictly from the tip jar. I grossed about $4&change. The new set of strings on the 12 string cost more than that. But they were overdue to be changed. And actually, Santa brought the strings, so I guess I made money after all.

Per Naukilo/Dennis' reply - Ron Kanahele is the cousin of David Rogers, and last performing steeler of this great musical family. He sat in for a couple of #s (singing) at yesterday's Ward Warehouse Hawaiian music show, as well as his usual 1st Friday gig near the Chinatown Post Office. He can do it all, and in a style you simply don't see anymore. Good fun.

Bobby Ingano never was a student of Feet, but did learn about life from him, which is even more important. What he learned on steel from Feet was from the records, and finding Feet's tuning on a junker Rick steel given to him after Bobby gave Feet a Rick bakelite because he had no working steel.

Ron and Bobby are the most interesting steelers in Hawaii, and neither get the attention they deserve. Both are wonderful people.

Ron, Thanks for the very interesting post. Do you know if Ron Kanahele has done any recordings. Bobby is superb.

He's done a few Cds over the decades, but finding them is next to impossible. He mentioned one that he'd done fairly recently called - Anuhea - but nothing came up in a google search. I'll ask again what may be available and reply asap. He's one of current Hawaiian music's biggest secrets and will probably remain that way, sadly.
Thanx for asking!
