I just finished watching the dvd's of this year's Merry Moonarch. There are some really chicken skin performances. I don't know if it is my imagination, but these performances seem to be getting better and better. Each time I get one of these sets, (and even more so the time I was lucky enough to attend live,) I come away with a deeper appreciation of a couple of mele, as well as add to my "want to play" list. (I would bet that after watching this year's dances, you won't be able to play "Kimo's Hula," the same as before.)

I highly encourage all of you to check this dvd set out. As most of you know, mele without hula is not a complete thing, and this set is a really good second best to attending live -- and even the performances which didn't win were a definite cut above a lot of what is available to tourists.

You are absolutely right, Ray, that the mele is not complete without the hula. It adds so much to the mana of the song. I was watching the videos as the festival was ongoing. Some exciting stuff. I love seeing the Kahiko and I love seeing the costumes. Some of the auana was, shall I say, "interesting", such as the one halau who did a motorcycle thing.

The ladies are so graceful, and makes me feel no shame I one pudgy wahine, no matter in hula, can be "big boned" and no one cares.

I always enjoy watching the Merrie Monarch footage but it pales in comparison to actually being there. The entire week's celebration and ceremony is something that really needs to be experienced firsthand. The hula, the mele, the chant and the atmosphere of it all can lead to one "chicken skin" moment after another. All this topped off by the Aloha Spirit being shared by all in attendance has made the Merrie Monarch one of my favorite experiences ever...
