Aloha e Verna:

It's a lovely day in Seattle - rare November sunshine, temperature in the upper 50s. Mr. Aki was just here in this area a few weeks back, and we got to hear him play at a couple local (and by local, in this case, I mean Hawaiian cuisine!) restaurants. In a few hours, we will be having dinner with about a dozen friends, then going off to see Willie K in a rare reunion concert with four of his brothers. It's not Hawai`i, but we're lucky to get what we can here (Herb Ohta, Jr. & Nathan Aweau played here in the past week, and Owana Salazar stopped by while she was attending a conference in town.)

A hui hou! =Gregg=

Aloha e Gregg,
Wow, totally Hawaiian localization in Seattle.
The last time I saw Willie K in person was at Maria's Cantina on O'ahu many moons ago. His father Manu (bless his soul), played a special gig with Eddie Kamae and The Sons of Hawaii. The group came to Moloka'i to share their mana'o on Sam Li'a in all of the schools. I was blessed to have been the Hawaiian Studies Resource Teacher for the Department of Education at that time and I was given the task of picking up Manu at the pier.
After the tour of the schools, the men came to my home for homemade stew, poi and fried fish. So ono! In the evening, they played at the old Pau Hana Inn.
I saw Nathan Aweau (Hapa) at the Waikoloa Resort on the Big Island this past April. Maika'i no! Nathan's voice is so nahenahe nui.
Give my Aloha to your friends at dinner. Enjoy the concert.

Aloha, Verna,

I am a little unusual because the very first Hawaiian Island I ever visited was Molokai (after a brief stop, of course, at the airport in Oahu). I was enchanted even before I landed. To me, what was charming about the island is what wasn't there: Walmart, giant grocery stores, traffic, hordes of tourists. It was amazing. I spent an unforgettable week there, on my first visit to Hawaii, and the day I got home, I bought a ukulele and began my first feeble attempts to learn a few words in the Hawaiian language, by listening to lots and lots of Hawaiian recordings.

Mahalo nui loa for your warm welcome. We are glad to have you here. And may Molokai remain Molokai!

Slow down! It's Molokai.

As for "Hawai'i Aloha," I got to sing it with musicians and dancers who were performing in three different places on Maui: the Hula Grill, the Sea House, and in the lobby of the Ka'anapali Beach Hotel. My next goal is to sing "'Alika" in front of crowds if I get back there.

Aloha Vernamar,
I can not agree more that Moloka'i is a very special place. I love it too. Would much rather be there now than here in the cold. Welcome.

"A hui hou kakou, malama pono".

Aloha e Nani,
Mahalo 'ia 'oe no kou aloha pumehana.
It is wonderfully warm here on Moloka'i- 81 degrees with the tradwinds blowing. From my picture window at home, I see na kuahiwi(mountains), na kumu la'au (Kiawe trees), the blue sky and white clouds. Neighbors are "talking story" and for now, no cars on the street. Life is fantastically good!
"Lucky we live Hawaii" however, more so, "Moloka'i no ka heke".
Keep warm and safe in Delaware.

Aloha e joka,
It takes talent to write in Pidgin English. I also enjoy your mana'o- If can, can, no can, no can. So true yeah?
My niece and her 'ohana live in Waiakea Heights in Hilo. As a matter of fact, my Moloka'i 'ohana will be flying to Kona this Wednesday for my Dad's 85th Birthday and Thanksgiving. My Hilo 'ohana is coming to Kona to join us.
Hey, Kona has changed a lot since I left home. Talk about traffic and tons of strange people out there. I do appreciate the stores though- none like that on Moloka'i.
Enjoy life on the mainland.

Aloha e Alika,
Good to be back on Moloka'i. Talking story with the Kona and Hilo 'ohana was great. It warmed my heart to watch my sons and na mo'opuna meet their uncles, auntys and cousins for the first time. We really should go home to Kona more often however, too expensive. Cheaper to fly to Vegas then to fly home now days.
After all the eating, I took my ukulele and started playing. We had good fun singing all the old songs from the 60s. Was more fun trying to remember all the words. Even more fun after several bottles of wine when everybody sounded much better.
I'm sure you had fun with your na ho'aloha a me 'ohana.
Aloha a hui hou,
Aunty Verna

Howzit, Verna! You know Bobby Nakaihei? He's a friend of mine, living up north of me. He and his wife, Diane, have a Hawaiian restaurant--Bobby's Hawaiian Style. Ono grinds. Food Network had a show featuring them last month. Get laulau, spam musubi, poke, lomi salmon, li'dat.

Aloha e thumbstruck,
I do not know your friend Bobby (Nakihei?).
Gee, good to know there are restaurants in Seattle serving local kine grinds. Next time I'm in Seattle, I'll drop by and say "Aloha".
Usually when I travel, I like to eat foods which we don't have on Moloka'i. We have luau food all the time at everybody's pa'ina. I enjoy hao'le food too!
Mahalo 'ia 'oe no kou mana'o.
