Woeful news posted by Jerry Santos on olomanamusic.com!!

Olomana will be wrapping up our 15 year engagement at The Paradise Lounge this coming weekend. The new owners of the Hilton have decided to close the Paradise Lounge as an entertaiment venue. Our last evening will be Saturday March 1st.

Mahalo for your continued support. We hope to see you soon.

Sure hope Jerry and friends will find a new venue soon . . . and . . . if somebody doesn't snatch them up soon, Jerry's going to discover how nice it is NOT to work on Friday and Saturday nights!

My wife and I spent many wonderful evenings enjoying Olomana at the Hilton over the years . . . I'm very sorry to see this long run come to an end.

Jerry is one of the rare full-time musicians in Hawai`i. It might be nice to have Friday and Saturday off. It is not quite as nice to lose your home and starve to death.

I have been dreading this all week... You know... The notion that bad things happen in threes. Not nearly as tragic as the first two, but at least now the third has manifested itself.

I'm really sorry to hear that. Besides seeig them when I lived there, I've told several visitors to check them out and they were all pleased. I hope they find a new venue soon!

Aloha,
John A.

Well - does Jerry still play at Chai's? Funny this should come up. We were just listening to Honolulu Magazine's 50 best songs (of which there are only 11 on the first CD), and were listening to Ku`u Home o Kahalu`u. Gosh darn is that ever such a beautiful song. So many other folks have done it (even Paul has done it in public). But nothing, nothing, nothing compares with Olomana from way back when. The guitar picking on it is beautiful beyond compare. Oh, so nice. That has got to rank right up there with one of the best songs EVER written by anyone anywhere. I love the poetry in it.

Uncle Jerry - we need you to keep the music going.

And Bill Wynne, bite your tongue. I've (ashamedly) been thinking about the three thing, too, but I am scared to say the Olomana thing is probably not number 3. Maybe it was 1) my dad 2) my Auntie (Genoa) and 3) My uncle (Raymond). And that's enough. Pau already. Auwe.

Jerry still plays at Chais, on Mondays. And hey - another bit of good news... for those not here in Hawai'i nei, Jerry will be on Pakele Live on March 13th... airs from 6 to 8 pm Hawaii time and you can watch on http://www.alohavideo.tv/index_live.htm or www.lava.net (Auntie Maria's a sponsor - mahalo nui Auntie!)

If you ARE here in Hawai'i nei, come out and support! It's at Pakele Lounge in the Ala Moana Hotel, just off the lobby (and can park free next door at Ala Moana shopping center - woo hoo!!!) I go every week, and it's always good fun and GREAT music... 'specially with Bruddah Wade in da house to MC!

This is a major bummer. Jerry Santos and friends at the Hilton was an institution.

When one window shuts, another will open...

For years, Jerry's been s-l-o-w-l-y working on a new solo release, but never had the time to complete it.

For years, Jerry and Olomana have had to turn down many, many offers to perform on the mainland -- able to only squeeze in one or two per year, due to their weekend gigs at the Hilton.

Now there might be time for _all_ of this...uiha!!

BTW, Jerry's in great spirits. Here's just part of an email he sent me over the weekend:
"I'm trying to focus people's attention on the good time we've had and the community that has been created over the years."

That is so typically Jerry. Thank you for sharing this. It makes me feel better to know that they are essentially OK with this.

Haunani was hardly ever there anyway. In all of my years of seeing Olomana at the Hilton, she was only on stage with them once. Every other time, she was at her second home in Washington, D.C. doing the OHA "thing." I would have a better chance at seeing her in D.C. by hopping in the car and getting on I-95.. (Why haven't I ever done that? Oh, right. Because she didn't invite me!)

Sarah and I went to see and hear them specifically because we found out that Haunanai was going to play that Saturday night. Jerry is swell, but Haunani was a trip. That big woman working that big guitar was something else. Wally was really neat, too. He wasn't just pounding out bass, he was taking lots of leads and licks. Sarah had a nice talk with him during a break, too.

That Hilton venue was not the greatest then, either. There were these big square pillars blocking the view of all those great musicians stuffed away in an alcove - and the big bar was nearly empty where they could have been.

Bill, any time she is playing in DC, make a point of going. She is really rare.

But Olomana will be moving to the Tapa Bar at the Hilton:

Hooray !
We stay in the Tapa Tower every year.
Now we don't have to walk to a different bar to listen to music.
We just have to take the elevator down !!

I wonder now if the Advertiser's pronouncement was premature. Taken from the Star Bulletin's article on Aunty Genoa's funeral yesterday:

"Musicians and entertainers played and sang throughout the extended viewing, doing short sets in honor of Keawe -- among them . . . Jerry Santos, who performed twice at the family's request. . .
'During my last years at the Hilton -- which, coincidentally, ended this past weekend,' said Santos, 'Aunty would drop by a couple of times a month and sit in on our last set. I miss her very much, but I guess it's time for new beginnings.'"

I guess the best course is to call before you head over to the Hilton if you're looking for Olomana.

I just got off the phone with Jerry...who was surprised to learn that he was a topic of conversation on taropatch.net!

He sez that he & Wally Suenaga will be performing tonight in the Tapa Bar, 8-11pm.
