Try look the Code of Federal Regulations and the U.S. Code. Plenty of regulations, rules, law. Yikes. Then each state has their own codes. Plenty laws. Enforcement of laws is a whole nother animal. |

Went to a law library- a huge building with endless rows of books shelved floor to ceiling, all filled with laws in countless thousands of pages of tiny print. And we are told that ignorance of the law is no excuse!
I think whenever a legislative body passes a law, they should have to void two laws with equal effect on our freedoms. After a century or so, when the number of laws gets reasonable, we could reduce it so they only have to void one.
Whenever I hear congress is deadlocked, ineffectual, fillibustering, on recess or for whatever reason not passing more laws, I think "Wonderful!" They can't pass laws that protect the people and environment from greed, since they are totally bought as a whole, so the best thing they can do is nothing.

One way to fix that is to quit jawjackin' and start politicking. I once read that if we are not part of the solution, we are part of the cause. Plenty things wrong all over. Plenty things right, too. One has to decide what one wants to change and work about making that change, even if it takes effort; even if it is very hard. That is the pono way.
Laws mean absolutely nothing if they are not enforced. If they are not worth enforcing, they are not worth existing. Jay walking to get a ticket? Give me a break. Make me get emissions test on my car to get license plates? Give me a break. Regulate what color I can paint my house? and on and on.
If I do not like it, there are "official" ways of getting things changed. And it is a bit "un-pono" to paint all politicians with the same brush. I am certain that there are many who truly have ideals and truly want to represent the PEOPLE and have morals and ideals. No stereotyping.
I should be more politically involved, but I am lazy. Maybe now my heart has mended and I am getting strong every day, I won't be as lazy. I am still trying to figure out my kuleana. |

Wanda-
Good point about the "jawjackin'". I have never run for office, but I frequently write to my various representatives in State and Federal government as well as to department heads who are neglecting to enforce important laws. In Hawai'i where things are a little more personal I could talk to them personally as well as testify at public hearings. I have also initiated legal action to force the government to do what is pono and legally required, and submitted a number of comments on government projects that were not pono.
Although these things do force the people involved to consider and respond to your points, except for the legal action it pretty much all qualifies as jawjackin' also. Your final line is the key- figure out your kuleana. Scattered efforts are just smoke in the wind, but with a focused effort you can accomplish far more than you might expect. And your passion will draw others to help you. If we each chose just one thing that would make our planet a better place, and made it a life goal to change that one thing, what a wonderful world we would live in!

Well, the British press is now saying that America is in a Depression. See the article below:
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/usa-2008-the-great-depression-803095.html
I think they are full of it. Just a catchy headline to get you to read it - but nothing of real substance. Chris - they even have something about Michigan in there.
Anyway - what is the technical definition of a depression? |

2 or more quarters of decreasing GDP is a "recession". NBER only figures that out waaaaaaaay after the fact. I don't think anyone ever defined a depression; it probably isn't possible. You can read about all the dismal issues at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Depression

A friend sent this investment advice to Paul:
If you had purchased $1,000.00 of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. > > With Enron, you would have $16.50 left of the original $1,000. > > With WorldCom, you would have less than $5.00 left. > > If you had purchased $1,000.00 of Delta Airlines stock, you would have $49.00 left. > > And, if you had purchased United Airlines stock, you would have nothing left. > > But, if you had purchased $1,000.00 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling refund you would have $214.00. > > Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink heavily, and then recycle. > This is called the 401-Keg Plan. > >

Hey Ma, it doesn't have to be beer. This money-making model would also work with soft drinks too. Quick! Better go tell Pa before he skedaddles out the door on that beer run.
