Kory,
Yes, maintenance is one of the keys, as is education, and to a certain extent, luck. You also have to know your family medical history.

My cancer is genetic -- my dad died from it --it runs in his family. All of his brothers have it, all of the males in my family will probably get it. Luckily he gave me the heads up on it almost forty years ago. I was first diagnosed ten years ago when I was forty-seven. Twenty years earlier than I thought I might get it.

Luckily my cousin who was my doctor knew the family history. He insisted that after I turned forty that I had to take the PSA. Just over six years later it showed up. If I had followed the standard guidelines of waiting until age fifty to take the PSA, the cancer would have been discovered too late. It would have been an exercise in medical futility.

Peter, I'll never understand the reluctance of some to take preventative measures. We're not here just for ourselves.

Sorry I'm late to the lovefest, but Jesse, I have heard Kory sing! As recently as our last kanikapila! I don't remember the song (I think it was in English) but I was astonished to hear music coming out of his mouth as well as his guitar (I was sitting right next to him). I've also heard Kory sing bluegrass harmonies, which are spot on and beautiful, and polka harmonies as well.

For faster pictures of Kory in lederhosen and a glimpse into his other musical life: http://www.happyhansmusic.com/

Another of Kory's talents: cooking. He was describing pirogy (sp?) pie to me (last kanikapila), which made me hungry despite the fact I'd just had dinner. I once teased him about the very different musical styles he plays, and he looked at me with mild surprise and said "eh, but get `ono food in both!"

Uncle Danny says Kory's the best slack key player in Seattle. Kory is certainly my favorite slack key player in Seattle.

Peter, we look forward to your coming to Seattle and jamming with us. You'll get to hear how good Kory and Jack are in person (you already know how good Al is).

Pierogi are the eastern-European version of siu mai, or like Italian ravioli. Noodle dough containing some kind of stuffing - usually potato, cheese or sauerkraut. Then fried with butter and onions. Mmmmm-mmmm good. All the Catholic churches sell them as fund raisers during Lent.

Now czarnina is a different story alltogether.

PS: Gosh, Kory -- everybody LOVES YOU first, and the music you make second.

When I was recuperating from the by-pass surgery and going stir crazy wanting to get out of the house, Kory so kindly called us on the phone and gave Paul and I an impromptu slack key concert over the phone. Is that a nice guy or what!

To take a slight tangent (but not to take any attention away from Kory's playing slack key in lederhosen) - see that piece of art on the wall to the right of Nai`a? It looks like a photo? It's not - it's a quilted portrait, created by our own Neeej. Good, ain't she?
