People who know me off the board know that I grumble enough. I try not to grumble on-line-there are plenty of other people who do that, and I try to be mindful that this is Andy's sandbox and he graciously allows us to play in it. Also, although Mahina and I saw the woman who was shot being attended to, I am SURE that this is the last pose she would want to be caught in. Baritone got it exactly right. There is sooooooo much good going on at Folklife that doesn't get talked about otherwise. This shooting, although certainly newsworthy and sobering, doesn't need any extra coverage from me.

Day Four:

Again, no specifically Hawaiian or `ukulele events scheduled for today, so here are just three random things we saw today:

Shodo (calligraphy) demonstration by Hiroko Watanabe, a youthful shodo master (she's the one in the ripped jeans).

Anzanga Marimba, based in Seattle. It is impossible to be still when they play.

This guy was a one-man band, and everything sounded good together. This is one of the reasons I love Folklife - some of the buskers are not very good, but others, like this guy, are fascinating.

We got rain at Folklife this year only on Friday, a minor miracle in itself. We ate a lot (lots of choices: Indian, Chinese, Tibetan, Thai, Russian, Mexican, Kenyan, other African, Greek, Korean, Filipino, plus good ol' American standbys of hot dogs, barbecue, caesar salad, pizza, corn, crabcakes, strawberry shortcake and ice cream). Saw lots of TPers and other friends. Played a lot, laughed a lot. As Jack would say, "Another victory!"

Thanks, everybody.

He's called "Christopher of the Wolves," and he's from Portland OR, originally. If you do an internet search, you can find his story and his CDs.

Regarding one of Sunday's performances - the Seattle `Ukulele Players Association...just found out about this video; be sure to stay until the end, for my "special moment." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNPb9eMExKM

I had a gyros for lunch and pancit and lumpia for dinner. 'Ono!
Here are a couple more pix from my only day at Folklife:

Mark performs a solo gig at Cafe Impromptu, a venue in the lobby of the opera house. He talked story and dedicated a song to Ray Kane and Auntie Nona Beamer.

Gary, Kory and Al talk in the green room before the gig by Da Oddah Guys.

The guitar's name is Kai; the decoration is woodburned roses, vines and a sword; roses and sword are guilded. I bought him in a flea market store on the Oregon coast. He must have been done by a fisherman as he had a lot of sand in him(still has some) and smelled so badly of fish that my cat kept trying to climb into the sound hole! Kai is warped but loves slack key. (I guess that applies to me too.).

Sorry to give you short shrift, Retro. You performed admirably in all venues, so I didn't call attention to you in the corner with the bass.
Folklife TPers might want to check out a Youtube of Gary singing for Halau Hula 'O Napualani on Sunday:

Gary's falsetto is the real deal and hopes to get his CD, with plenty old-style leo ki'eki'e, released in the near future.

That kinda cool though. The picture of course is really missing Jack but Gregg is in the picture in the mirror and that is interesting composition.

Whew! Can I just say, I'm glad you posted this footage, and not any of me dancing "`Ulupalakua"?

Gary's an amazing singer - when I knew that I needed to add to our band for this show, I contacted him (& Al - who is also a top-notch performer) first, then Jack stepped up to play bass.

Braddah Jesse, do you remember what Gary and Kory were pointing and looking at with such amusement? Just curious.

I was pointing at Al's toy that holds his guitar. Something small but strong. Plus we were laughing because it has his name. So, I said, "the store already knew you were coming over, they put your name on it." Al said, "I had to buy em." Thats what we were laughing about.

Da Oddah Guyz with a wonderful surprise ringer. L to R: Gregg, Jesse "Hapakid" Tinsley, Mike Bristow, Al (why does Al have all these cool instruments?), Gary, Kory, and the top of Jack's head.

Seattle `Ukulele Players' Association.

Because of scheduling, I didn't get to see performances by Sweet Aloha from Eugene or Mark Nelson. But happily, we got to see them afterward.

Not much Hawaiian or `ukulele-themed stuff on the official schedule tomorrow, so I can't promise any pictures. But I hear Kory will be jamming there tomorrow (as if that's news!).

Reid, you and Sarah must just come next year. Really.

Hui Ante, mahalo nui loa for da pichas. Going send dem to my kids in Orlando Florida. Den dey get more stuff of me. Also, I wen send da link to the YouTube for dem to see. Wish it was not so dry, my vocals were crakin...
