Eh Pete, so now you know why right away I been defer all dis pomp and circumcision to you and yowah profound inbred knowledge of all tings Pordagee. I always tot da double flash was someting dat I caused oddah peepo to do because of my bubbly personality and effervescent smile, and not because da double flasher was Pordagee. But deyah you go. What do I know, since I'm just one lowly non-Pordagee pee on.
And eh, no foget go wash da spatula bumbai you going foget and use um fo make fried rice. |

Brudda Ed, I waz gonna ansa you sooner, but I had spalling errors I had to correc. I tied yeah, but I waz just tinking I no you no dat dea iz won hiyaarki in da whirl, but brah, I jez like you, I won werking stiff oa won stiff werking lidat. But da diffrance between me n you iz I keep eryting in front of me -- acsapt fo Brudda Duke- wid him you jez gotta make sua you upwin. So az I waz saying yeah –I chai to keep eryting in front of me yeah, den I get perspactiv n I can make da adjustments reel easy brah. I chai to stay current n no get stuck inna past, bumbai I waistime chaing too rememba eryting befo it slips away fo good, poho. Dis way I ahead in da game.
But jez so you no, `coz you no mo clue, da Pordagee double flash iz da same az da borot double flash, but fo you dey not raisin dea Ibrow becoz you get won bubbly personality or fo yoa smile. Chai tink about it fo about one minute n a haf…You already no wot dey say about da gurl wen she get won reel good personality, so how you no dey not tinking da same about you?
Eh but you not alone bradah. I no my wife neva wen marry me `coz a my smile – I get udda assets. Fo instance reel early on in da marriage ova some tweny yeas ago waz Tanksgiving. I waz ova my inlaws house – nice house you no. My fada inlaw wen make da house `coz he used to werk construction but he neva wen fix alla holes in da screen so sometimes get plany flies yeah.
I go make da turkey lidat n da dinna fo my in-laws, my fada my mada, my brudda n sistas in-laws n da nieces yeah. Waz won reel good spred. But had plany flies in da house yeah so my mada in-law gives me da fly swatta `coz she herd I was reel good widem from my college daze. Bang I go wipem out, alla flies in da house pau. I had reel good eyes back den. But den a liddle latah, get plany moa flies comin in da house dis waz da second wave. Waz like dey was on won Kamakaze mission anden– dey new had good food insai da house.
So I wen go find da hole wea dey waz comin in. It waz da window by da kitchen sink, but da hole stay in won kinda tite spot anden you couldn’t put your finga ontop to try n blockem. I figgah eh I wen college, I wen go learn some stuff, why no go try deterrence fo da fly -- at da time still had da cold war.
Waz reel simpo, I jez go outside da window anden go gedem befo dey come in. I figgah waz won good plan becoz da flies gonna see alla dey buddies all bussup in pieces and dey wood stop. I go outside by da window by wea da hole stay. I wen nail 48 flies, dey waz confirmed `coz I waz counting, anden probably had anada dozen probables.
Oh da family waz happy yeah no mo flies in da house `coz I stay outside da house downing'em yeah. Eh bumbai I come insai da house n I go eat alone, da food waz cold, da football game stay on anden. Since dat time my mada in-law no look at me da same way.
Laz nite, during da TV show “So you Tink You Can Dance?” my dawda gives me da fly swata to get won B-52 (a rather large flying cockaroach) waz harassing her in da family room anden da living room. I no mo da same reflex I couldn’t gedem. But laz nite my wife she remembas diz story anden waz laffing yeah, `coz she nos dea waz wonce won time I was won warrior.
Oh yeah , da spatula I wen go washem. We gonna usem to make chili fo dinna tonite.

Yikes. I'm sorry. I just tend to run on.
But actually, this forum has really been a blessing to me for so many reasons. Number one, I have met so many nice people through this forum, some only on this board, some also by phone or by mail and luckily, some in person! I have also met and had talk story with quite a few Hawaiian musicians because they know my name (wonder how) through Taro Patch.
Most of all, through this forum, I was able to meet Jay and Duke. They are two of the kindest hearted (not hoof hearted) guys in the world. Without Taro Patch, I would never have been able to know them. Same thing for Menpachi Man, Momi and Gregg, Braddah Ed, da Joka, Kory, Jack, Nani and all the rest of you guys.
You all have helped me keep my sanity as I was recovering from my heart problems. Many days I was quite sad, but Taro Patch always cheered me up when I was blue. One day, Kory even called on the phone and played some of his beautiful music for us. You have all taught me so much. I now understand a bit of the language. I recognize many songs anfter only a few notes. I am up to two chords on the `ukulele. And on and on and on.
Andy, my friend, you are the instigator of this wonderful, funny, enlightening forum. I sincerely thank you for it.
I agree with what Wanda said here. Mahalo nui loa e Andy for deciding to create this wonderful forum! All of the support I received when I had the hearing problem made me feel much less stressed and made my sad face burst into a huge smile. I love you all.
And regarding the posts, let's see who the next person is to join Wanda in the ahonui stage!
E Wanda, how much Hawaiian do you know? I'm curious as to whether you know more than me or not. If you do, maybe you could teach me what you know that I don't know even though you're not a kumu? I do that all the time for people on the mainland who want to learn. |

'Alika - I am by no means a person to teach anyone Hawaiian. What little bit I know, I learned from the songs and froom reading my Kawena Pukui dictionary. However, I have been very fortunate in having some very knowledgeable folks to teach me: Puakea Nogelmeier, Keali`i Reichel and the entire de Silva `ohana, especially Kihei. Also, we have plenty of friends here on Taro Patch who are so very knowledgeable and so willing to help us learn.
`Alika - pardon the sick pun, but I just have to say it -- me teaching you Hawaiian would be like the blind leading the blind. We might get somewhere eventually, but lots of bumps along the way.
My Hawaiian is like my Italian and French -- cookbook Italian and cookbook French, so I could order from a menu and not order cow innards or something like that. You know, like aglio e olio or oeufs. |
Me ke aloha Malama pono, Wanda |

My favorite Hawaiian song could vary from moment to moment. There are so many beautiful songs, so many rascally songs. My favorite is whatever makes me happy at the moment. |

Likewise, I don't have one myself. But I think if I had to pick now it would be... um... "O 'Oe 'Io." |
