Taropatchers have won many prestigious awards and honors, such as the Hokus, Hawaiian Music Awards, and Grammys. Tonight, a couple of us Taropatchers were part of the Guinness World Record for the Largest Guitar Ensemble: http://www.concordtsba.org/guitar/guiness.pdf .

Bruddah Ray K. and I, and maybe some other Taropatchers whom we didn’t see, were part of this historic record-breaking event held today, July 1, 6:40P, at Todos Santos Plaza in Concord, CA (San Francisco East Bay). Folk-rock luminary and Woodstock performer Country Joe McDonald led 2,052 (I just heard this count on the 10:00P news) of us guitarists in playing and singing Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land.” The old record was 1,802, which was from a performance in Germany.

We had to play the song for over 5 minutes and each of us participants had to register and sign in to make the attempt official. Fortunately, they chose to play the song in the key of G, so naturally Ray and I were in Taropatch to make sure Hawaiian Slack Key was represented! If I may say so myself, all 2,052 of us sounded very good together--everyone was playing in rhythm and singing with a lot of enthusiasm. Country Joe actually had us all tune up together and do a dry run about 30 minutes before the record-breaking attempt. Channel 5 News covered the event live.

The event was very well organized and a really cool experience, as folks from all ages, races, and walks of life showed up with guitars. The vibe was very harmonious, positive, and one might even say full of the aloha spirit. We met folks who were from Hawaii, those who were familiar with slack key, several who wanted to learn slack key, and even one guy who took a lesson from Uncle George Kahumoku at his home in Maui. Of course we told these folks about Taropatch.net.

Overall, this was a very uplifting experience, and I was happy to be a part of it. Eh Ray, good thing I dragged you out from San Francisco to the East Bay to be a part of history, right brah? Sil, where you wuz?

Aloha,

Doug

Count one more in taropatch - actually I brought my taropatch F guitar and used a capo. We also snuck one `ukulele into the mix, with my buddy Ikaika playing.

I just hope the Guiness folks don't see a picture of the guy with the banjo - surely they would disallow the record for a violation like that <grin>.

Lawrence, I found out about the event in the Contra Costa Times. I heard through the grapevine that the organizers refrained from advertising en masse because they didn't want the riffraff from places like Palo Alto and Marin County to show up in the beautiful East Bay
