Tonight and Tomorrow Night Only!!!! George Kahumoku Jr, Keoki and Norton Buffalo!
The more I get to know Norton Buffalo, the more I just can't wait to see these two on stage! It is performance that folks should not miss.
Blues, Harmonica meets Hawaiian with two of the most legendary of their genre! Norton, an icon in the music history books has played and known such greats as Steve Miller, Bonnie Raitt, Carol King, Doobie Brothers, Les Paul, Boz Scaggs, Elvin Bishop, Booker T and the MGs and the list continues. Check out his image gallery and you'll get a glimps of his long and incredible journey in music. Its awesome!
Norton connected with George in Hawaii back in the early 90s during a benefit performance on the Big Island with Jesse Colin Young. George and Norton struck a great friendship and soon after did some recording together for one of George's Dancing Cat CDs. More recently, last year George and Norton got together and performed several shows together and did some extensive recording together. This summer, Norton taught harmonica as well as a songwriting and improvisation class at George's Slack Key and Ukulele workshop in Maui. There is a special magic that comes forth when these two play together that is rare and very special. Norton has found a way to slip his harmonica beautifully into the Hawaiian sound and it is wonderful to hear and feel the aloha glowing when they are performing together.
"The High Lama Of Harmonica" Santa Rosa Press Democrat
"It's not just Buffalo's execution, which is flawless, or the fact that he's a more than competent vocalist, or that years of collaboration have afforded him a guest star lineup that includes Miller and guitarist Elvin Bishop. It's also that Buffalo's capable of swinging through multiple blues oriented styles with the greatest of ease. Few manage it with as much aplomb as does Norton Buffalo." Genevieve Williams, Amazon.com Editorial Reviews
"Buffalo's forte is his choice of notes, not how many he can squeeze into a bar. His solo on Bonnie Raitt's version of Runaway ranks as one of the great harp solos of all time. It's a prime example of how an instrumental break can make a song." Los Angeles Times Calendar
"A case of near bewildering talent...he plays harmonica with a virtuosity that has widened eyes and opened mouths throughout the music industry. No one else who puts tongue to reed can touch him." The San Francisco Chronicle

Yes!!! Norton Buffalo is an amazing harmonica player, excellent and patient teacher, and a very cool, funny, generous, and down-to-earth guy. I had the privilege of meeting and learning from him at Uncle George's Maui workshop this past June.
If you're wondering how the harmonica might fit in with Hawaiian music, let me just say that Norton makes it blend in perfectly, regardless if the song is traditional Hawaiian, hapa haole, upbeat, sad, soulful, or a love ballad. He is very sensitive to the music and Hawaiian traditions. It's scary how he can get so many incredible sounds out of that little instrument (actually he brings a whole box of them in different keys on stage), including making it sound like a steel guitar.
I highly recommend seeing these guys. With the rapport Norton has with George and Keoki, along with the great musicianship, improvisation and story telling, the concerts will be incredibly entertaining. Guarans!
Aloha,

You know, as I was watching these 3 wonderful musicians on stage, it occurred to me that, in the past, it might have been possible for those old cowboys and paniolos to sit around the campfire, and as the guitars warmed up, someone might have whipped out a dusty, dirty harmonica to add to the mix. It seems perfectly natural to me.
And of course, Norton's presence added another dimension to the songs, both in the audio and the visual sense: Norton is a kick to watch. He has an understated but keen sense of humor.
Great show!

Wow, congratulations to you Susie for putting together another great concert tour.
I can only echo Julie's words. The addition of the harmonica, especially with someone of the enormous talent of Norton Buffalo was simply brilliant. The rendition of "Amazing Gace" with the interplay going on between Norton and George was truly one of those Chicken Skin moments that had the crowd just buzzing. Everyone was talking about it after the concert. As Julie said it really did add another dimension. I was so glad that I was there.
Also, thanks must be given to Liko Puha for the Oli that started the concert and for dancing "Ulupalakua".
Wonderful Hula throughout the evening by dancers from Leolani Lowery's Hula School of Santa Cruz. They provided the visual adornment with their graceful dancing and their obvious love of the Hula. They added another special dimension to the evening as well.
I also must mention how great it was to see Nancy Kahumoku up on stage dancing Hula. Everyone just loved it when she did Hi'ilawe with Keoki singing.
What a great night. |

| Listen to what Norton Buffalo adds to George Kahumoku, Jr.'s take on "Hawaiian War Chant" - the opening track on the fourth CD of live material from the weekly sessions on Maui, "The Spirit of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar." Outstanding! |
