Medford—On October 4th, Springstep's seven-part 2008-2009 Performance Series opens with Ancient Hawaiian Hula, featuring Halau 'o Keikiali'i, a traditional Hawaiian cultural group based in San Francisco. Since 1994, this halau (hula community) has been performing rare and exquisite ancient dances and chants alongside contemporary Hawaiian music and choreography. This performance, entitled Forces of Nature, will reveal through poetry, dance, and music, the art of hula and how ho'ailona (omens found in nature) guide and shape our lives.

Halau o'Keikiali'i is led by kumu hula Kawika Alfiche, Director of the APOP Hawaiian Cultural Center in San Francisco. Kawika has been a student of hula his entire life, and has been teaching and sharing Hawaiian culture and dance for over 10 years.

Hula is a sacred tradition for the Hawaiian people, and dates back to ancient times, when chants and body movements were first used as forms of communication with the gods. Until fairly recently, the Hawaiian language was primarily oral, its history and tradition passed down through dance and chants from one generation to the next. The survival of hula is an integral part of Hawaii's past and future; it has kept alive much of the culture's history, including a chronology of important events, battles fought, and genealogical histories of the people. With performances that both entertain and enlighten, Halau 'o Keikiali'i illuminates the richness of Hawaiian people and traditions. The group's mix of reverence, depth, playfulness, and virtuosity is both unique and mesmerizing.

In keeping with the brand new format of Springstep's Performance Series (which incorporates optional participatory elements with the artists), this show will be followed by special Master Workshops for all ages the following day:
