Led told me that one-string-detuning story about him and his Uncle Fred--he saw it as a kind of initiation, since when he was hip enough to turn the trick around on his uncle, he was ready for serious instruction.
On the term "master": A few years back, when I queried the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts about the various participants in the Folk Arts Apprenticeship program, the then-Coordinator John Keoni Fujitani emphasized that the master-apprentice terms were taken from the mainland crafts-training tradition and that the notion of a "master" was (in this case, literally) foreign to Hawaiian tradition.

When any of us get together to share our na'au and mana'o regarding what we love to play and do it with ha'aha'a and our peers break a smile when we sometimes play something that sounds good, and then we share food that was made by some of the participants that is worth more than any glitzy award voted on by strangers. The world may never hear these sessions but when players like Peter Medeiros and Shawn and Zack smile and I realize that I can play with them without screwing up too much I find that I have accomplished a heck of a lot in music. I have refrained from remarking about Daniel and Tia because it doesn't matter in the long run what awards they may accrue. I have played with the players I admire the most and I can say that we made each other smile . The list is long but it includes Duke , Jay, Retro, Slipry1, Thumbstruck, Rich Smith, Jay Syverson and many others already mentioned in other topics in taropatch. Sometimes we play a non Hawaiian song too. What does it matter what someone plays? Why all the writing about blood and where you grew up and stuff. These thing do count in the proper place. But why not just wish the winners well and when we get achance we play a real Hawaiian song for someone and tell them what we just did. Now don't ask me what a real Hawaiian song is. If you need to ask you don't deserve an answer. I say that with a smile by the way. I said before, if you think an award furthers your music career then OK. If you don't care that is OK too. As for me I'm too busy trying to learn a song to care about awrds. I don't even watch them on TV. I do like to read what yu all have to say though and Peter has a good handle on the philosophy of the music world as a business. Me as a player has no such understanding. I do know thatif I wanted to be a star winning awards would mean a lot, right now it doesn't matter. my music however has allowed me to make friends all over the place. People in Hawaii Ohio Washington California all have become my friends.I have met luthiers and uke makers and teachers and performers. With all that I don't need no friiggin award. Aloha to all and jus pres. |

Does that mean I should take your award for "Best common sense post" back to the store?
Seriously, I agree. I, too, am in it for the fun. Look forward to having you guyzes back where it's cold. |
