Aloha no, Julie. So how's the fry pan? Aluminum is not on the CITES endangered species list or a Lacey target :-) So, you can travel with it with no worrys. BTW, does it expand and contract with changing temps. putting it out of tune? Hubby still playing bass?
Sarah and I saw Shawn at Carnegie Hall some years ago with a lot of other players, including Cyril and Aunty Genoa(if my Alzheimers is not making things up.) I don't remember any unorthodox playing style though.
Sarah is great and plays like mad, every day, and gigs, too. She makes up all kinds of variations right out of her head when playing pieces written by somebody else (or traditional) as she did last night. Recently she is playing mostly in D Wahine. And she composes her own pieces regularly. I am super jealous, but proud of her. She is also in her 3rd college equivalent year in Hawaiian language (UH Hilo and 'Aha Punana Leo), and just finished a fine conversation course (which she breezed through) and is waiting for the next to be constructed. She has 3 Skypes a week in addition to the class Skype, and just finished a conversation with a guy in Japan a few minutes ago. They talk about anything and anything, all in Hawaiian - just as you would in English. She also has tutored folks in conversation, vocabulary and grammar (via Skype). Frankly, I don't know how a lovely blonde talented woman, who is totally Hawaiian on the inside, Haole on the outside, is gonna be able to stand living on Moku Honua. I think the BI is the place to be, but how to do it?
Back to John Thomas... He is playing a gig for a charity at a nearby club Sunday and we will go. He mostly does charity appearances. And he usually asks Sarah to play a set with him. He also has organized the 9th Harp Guitar Gathering, with the excellent Stephen Bennett, in Milford, CT near us and we will spend about 16 hours straight with many famous guitarists who play the weird thing ( Sarah can fumble with it, John can really play his vintage Dyer and Stephen is a Champ). Muriel Anderson will be there and so will Kathy Wingert who will talk about making the beasts. Sarah makes very good use of the extra low harp strings playing slack key (but you gotta tune it properly to fit) and they also resonate like mad when playing only the standard 6 strings.
Oh, too be rich and live where we want in the way we want... But how many people manage even simple living.
Nice to hear from you - you bring back some fine memories (except no more singing and playing in high C around the campfire, OK? :-)

Actually our ohterwise mostly useless Congress has gotten a little upset with the heavyhanded raid at Gibson and have demanded some explanation from DOJ. One thing that the majority is good for is "less regulation" and attacking US businesses, like Gibson, right now is another nail in the Obama administration's coffin. It is quite possible that something will be done about Lacey, and the Tea Party loves to flaunt internation agreements like CITES. Much as we may abhor the rest of their politics, it actually might work to our advantage this time. I don't want to start a political debate here, just responding to Reid's pessamistic view on this topic. There are plenty of others to be pessamistic about. Aloha is sorely needed in the world today, Allen |

Allen, I wouldn't even go so far as to assume "we" abhor Tea Party politics. I have to put up with virulent anti-conservative viewpoints here in Vancouver on a regular basis, because of this strange fetish so-called liberals have of assuming everyone is in their camp.
The Conservative party in this country just won two consecutive elections, so it's a pretty lame assumption. I have had to sit through dinners listening to such folks rave on about the stupidity of anyone who would have voted for them - which includes me, my mother, and a whole lot of friends and family. You learn to bite your tongue for the sake of peace, but really - what the hell? |

Mike, My use of the "may" meant to convey that even those that abhor...might take succor on this issue. You are correct that any political statement on a forum of any type invites problematic responses, not that I would include yours as problematic. Just look at the brouhaha that any mention of the Grammys around here invokes. Thanks and Aloha, Allen |

Now that's what I like to hear! :) Here on the west coast, where for better or worse I moved in 1990, most people are not only liberals of the most self-righteously strident variety, but it is also a hotbed of Communists, anarchists, and other loser radical wannabes. It's like someone took 1968 or something and froze it in time - very adolescent and severely polarized.
I'm from Alberta, where our current (Conservative) Prime Minister is from and common sense and values like being a decent, responsible neighbor and citizen are rampant, I tell you! Gives the (predominantly Eastern power base and west coast) liberals the absolute creeps!
I suspect that geographically and demographically it's not much different from the States that way?...anyway it is of course the noisy minority who get the most attention and have done yeoman's work convincing the world Canada is like - well, like a frozen snapshot of 1968. :D |

I respectfully request an end to the left vs. right political attacks in this thread. I come to Taropatch for discussions about music topics, not political screeds. |

I understand the mention of politics resulting from the original topic. However, I hope the liberal vs. conservative debate dies out quietly so that we can get back to the music. |

I sent an E-Mail to Gibson requesting that they no longer import ANYTHING from India. The crux of this issue, is that India wants to finish the fretboards before they're shipped to the United States. I want ALL of my Gibson parts finished in the United States. PERIOD! Push the politics to the side and purely understand that India's getting greedy. Cut them off and let them starve. Does anyone else here, besides me, comprehend that India's claim that the same wood they're deeming illegal would be legal if they charged for and delivered the finished product? This has ZERO to do with conservation and forrestation and EVERYTHING to do with the greed of India. Let's all ommit politics and look at this for what it is... GREED BY INDIA! Gibson has way too much at stake to cheat here. No government of ANY party slant should take sides with any greedy country like India. PERIOD! Ric |

I didn't notice any attacks, myself. If the "suspended adolescent" shoe fits, wear it. I am sick to the very teeth of so-called liberals and their unjustified revolting smugness and ad hominem attacks on everything good and decent in Western culture.
If my representing the stark facts of Canadian west coast politics offended anyone - too bloody bad. Our country is deeply, probably irretrievably ill as a result of 4 decades of this leftover stale hippie crap, and excuse me that I'm passionate about that.
I promise that's all from me, but if anyone deems it necessary to shut me up permanently I can certainly deal with that. BTW - give Hawaii back to the Hawaiians! How's that for conservative? |

Enough, Mike. This is primarily a music-topic discussion group, not a Canadian-political one. And trust me, I am one of those rare Americans who actually pays attention to Canadian politics, culture, history, and so on, so I could easily get engaged with you in a lengthy debate on these points - but Taropatch is NOT the place for it, agreed? |

Yes, I absolutely agree Retro. I'll debate you offline though if you like. It would be interesting to get the perspective of an American who seems to think my country is too conservative. Very interesting. We could start with the revolving-door judiciary system for repeat-offender violent criminals, and move on from there.
Aloha and sorry for the heat -
Mike. |
