The exported wood was imported legally by Gibson and blessed India's and the US' customs. It has ZERO to do with forrestation and everything to do with the greed of India. This is a new interpretation. Gibson's been importing from India for a long time. Ric |

Cap'n Mike, you can take it on a plane to CT. Much more moderate in every way.
Now, for a few more facts, ignoring politics. The base issue is one of identifying just what the wood from India was and *encoded* as. I asked John to explain some details to me that the raid was based on - codes. There is some confusion about India regs/harmonized tariff codes (in legal lingo). Here is John's explanation (don't let your eyes glaze over because it is at the heart of the matter):

India allows export of sawn wood thinner than 6mm, which gets hs code 4708
India also allows the export of parts, which get hs code 9209: http://www.eximguru.com/hs-codes/9209-PARTS-FOR-EXAMPLE-MECHANISMS-FOR.
So, in this case, India classified the wood chunks as parts under 9209, which ain't right. LMI classified them as thinner than 6mm, using 4707, also ain't right. Someone at lmi did slip on one form and accurately describe the stuff as thicker than 6mm, using 4707.
USFW saw this and pounced. It looks like someone was deceptive.
There's any easy fix: India amends its law's, and applies the amended law retroactively. Poof, no issue.

Everybody still with me - because it is unclear who that deceptive someone was: Indian vendor, LMI, or Gibson, or all 3. NOT UFSW which was doing its job under current law and protocols, going after the current possessor of the wood. Blame your favorite, including the law, or withhold blame.

OK, old and new futs: This will be my last post on this topic (ain't you glad?) because everybody is getting tired of the whole thing. BUT, it ain't every day a friend of mine gets interviewed in the NY Times and then gets to show what 2 1940's Gibsons, identical, except one is rosewood and one is mahogany, sound like. Very nice exit.
