Dusty - I'll check with Andy - we thought we'd moved everything from my website to the taropatch. I've sent him the file just in case. Thanks for the notice. LRR |

Here's a question from a beginner about these tabs: Which would be the very easiest for me to attempt this Christmas season? I am just through the first two songs in Ozzie's book/CD...
I guess what I'm wondering, is are any of these easier than others, in your opinion, and, if so, which? Or conversely, which are the most difficult for tackling later? |

I haven't tried them all, but the Kinnaman version of "Silent Night" is fairly easy. |

Aloha Tonya - A little aside from the tabs - since you know the melodies well, why not try tuning to taropatch and then move around up and down the neck on the "parallel sixths" and pick out the tunes. You can add the 5th string base, or when in the D7, use the 6 base. The tabs are very nice full renditions of the songs, but you don't need them to get started. n |

Thank you, Pua Kai. That would be nice, since I do know the tunes, but what is a "parallel sixth"? I can play around with picking out melodies on my ukulele but never tried anything with this guitar stuff (I'm a real beginner). I'm imagining that you're suggesting plucking the fifth string alternately with the melody, kinda like I do with my first two songs in the Ozzie book? Thanks for your suggestion, Nancy, and any further ideas, if you have time. After all, I have of three weeks or so to master something completely ; ) |

Aha . . parallel sixths (and parallel thirds)
A chord normally has three notes A major chord has the first note (root), the third note, and the fifth note of the major scale. Therefore, a C Major chord is C(1), E(3), and G(5) Also a C6th chord is C(1), E(3), G(5), and A(6)
In Taropatch G Major you have tuned to the following notes: D - G - D - G - B - D (notes) 6 - 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1 (strings)
The G Major scale is: G - A - B - C - D - E - F# - G
Parallel thirds are two adjacent strings playing the first and third notes of a scale.
You can play these on strings 1 and 2 (and it is easy to remember the pattern, play Xs and Ys together)
X_]____Y_____X__Y____X_____Y___X_____Y (first string - D) X_]_Y_____X_____Y____X__Y______X_____Y (second string - B) 0_]_1__2__3__4__5__6__7__8__9__10_11_12_ (fret numbers)
The REALLY NEAT thing is that in a pairing (sixths and thirds are the same notes -- say what? -- no REALLY.
Here are the thirds from above B-D, C-E, D-F#, E-G, F#-A, G-B, A-C, and back to B-D (notes) 0-0, 1-2, 3-4, 5-5, 7-7, 8-9, 10-10, 12-12 (frets)
Parallel sixths would be on strings one and three __]____X_____Y__X_____Y_____X___Y_____X (first string - D) __]_________________________(second string - B [don't play]) X_]____Y_____X__Y_____X____Y______X_____Y (second string - G) 0_]_1__2__3__4__5__6__7__8__9__10_11_12_ (fret numbers)
Here are the sixths from above G-E, A-F#, B-G, C-A, D-B, E-C, F#-D, and back to G-E (notes) 0-2, 2-4, 4-5, 5-7, 7-9, 9-10, 11-12, 12-14 (frets)
So you can see that a G-E (sixth pair) is the same two notes as a E-G (third pair) - REALLY COOL!
Now see if you can figure out the other string pairings on the fretboard.

Thanks Mike! Hi Tonya - I was a little afraid when I used that term, parallel 6ths. It confused me too. If you have trouble with what Mike put up there, send me your phone number and I'll call you. I just learned about taropatch a year ago and am new to this stuff too. slkho - Rik Nieves, and the other SCSKS are still working hard to teach me. I'm not a musician and I'm way past the age when learning was easy, but it sounds so nice it's worth it. and by the way, when you read that thread about the harp-guitar thing, don't even believe that Mark can't play anything and everything that he picks up. I'm glad those guys are posting - I'd never heard of it, but am looking forward to hearing Mark play when he buys one. (tee hee) Have fun with the Christmas music!! auntie n |
