If you hum a little of it for me, I'll try to arrange it in taropatch. Seriously, I don't know the tune, although I've heard of it. Is there someplace on line that I can listen to it? Maybe my wife will know it - I'll check tonight. Others may be able tor respond faster, but we'll work on it. LRR |

Aloha Kakou,
Those who attended last nights Open Mike at the Express Garden Cafe in San Jose now have heard our little Holiday special performance.
Everyone knows the song "White Christmas" by Irving Berlin. This song has only one verse - so it is rather short and repetitive. We thought we would take the song and make it longer by adding another verse, and at the same time give it some tropical feeling. Fran asked about our modified lyrics so I will post them here for anyone who wants a "warmer" White Christmas. In order for the verse to work it is best if the last line of the first verse is slightly modified as well:
End of first verse:
May you days be merry and bright and SOME of your Christmasses be white.
New added second verse (sung after a pa'ani):
I'm also dreaming of a WARM Christmas like Island ones that have no snow. with palm trees swaying and children playing on white sand beaches all aglow.
I'm dreaming of a warm Christmas with breezes blowing on the palms. May your days be merry and charmed, and SOME of your Christmasses be warm.
You are all welcome to use this verse if you wish.

Nice work on a second, warm version of the chorus. The original verse, almost never performed: The sun is shining, the grass is green; The orange and palm trees sway. There's never been such a day in Beverly Hills, LA. But it's December the 24th, And I am longing to be up north. I'm dreaming etc.
The idea was that it was a New Yorker stuck in LA at Christmas, longing for the snow back home. My barbershop quartet sings this, including the original verse. We'll consider wearing Hawaiian shirts and singing your version. LRR |

I understand that the original version of the song was originally written for the movie "Holiday Inn" with Bing Crosby and friends.
There is another movie "White Christmas" where (of course), the song is presented again.
Now you are going to force me to rent this/these movie(s) and do some more research! Seems I recall something about L.A. in my dim recesses.

First movie co-star with Bing Crosby was Fred Astaire. They were rivals for the girl. The inn was a business where Astaire and Crosby were hired to arrange stage shows with big production numbers for each of the holidays; hence "Holiday Inn". So this was the Christmas song. Irving Berlin, one of my favorite composers, wrote all the songs, so he ended up writing this Christmas song, even though he was Jewish. The second movie co-star with Bing was Danny Kaye around 1954 in movie "White Christmas" - specifically tailored around this song. I think Rosemary Clooney was in the second movie, but I'm not sure. Lawrence, thanks for the inspiration. I used your concept and what I could remember of your lyrics to cobble together my own doggerel. I have two verses (or choruses, I guess, as described by Leonard) to try out at Lynn's halau party on Saturday.

Well, I thought that the "palm trees swaying" part was particularly nice, but turns out Irving beat me to it by about 50 years! At least he did not mention a beach! (Life's really a beach afer all)

Mahalo Lawrence for sharing a great 3rd verse! Leonard - did you get the music for Mele Kalikimaka? The best version I found was on Bing's album, White Christmas. n |

STeve sent me Mele Kalikimaka in a midi file. (Thanks, Steve). I got the melody anc chords out of that. I started working on the taropatch version last night. Not too hard to get the basics down. I hope to finish it this weekend, at least in a simple, straightforward version. LRR |

I hope everything has gone well for you, your loved ones and your slack key playing. Christmas is swiftly approaching and it's a good time to revisit those Christmas songs. I arranged the attached Christmas tab, Little Town of Bethlehem, to add to your repetoire. Intermediate and Advanced versions are provided. I consider the degree of difficulty more on the advanced end due to the chords and movements required. Sorry, it's just the nature of the song. I provided a hints sheet to aid in playing this piece.
