Aloha Music Camp Update
April 7th, 2008

Aloha kakou -

After an exhaustive search, we have selected the Keahou Beach Resort on the Island of Hawai`i as our new home. The Aloha Camp `ohana is grateful to everyone their assistance in helping us make this difficult transition. We feel this is the best alternative for our guests and the future of the Aloha Camps.

With the closure of the Molokai Ranch and Kaupoa Beach Village, it has become clear that Moloka`i simply does not have the facilities to handle a group as large as ours. Our hearts go out to our dear friends on Moloka`i, and we hope we will be able to return to Kaupoa some day.

I have posted some information about our new home on our website; please take the time to look it over. It is a wonderful location, full of Hawaiian history and culture and we know that we will be able to enjoy the true Aloha Music Camp experience.

The newly remodeled Keahou Beach Resort, owned by Kamehameha Schools, is dedicated to preserving Hawaiian culture while providing the best in Hawaiian hospitality. Keauhou Beach Resort invites you to a special place where nature and history reside in harmony.  It is truly a place like no other in Hawaii.  Explore ocean tide pools with gentle sea turtles, surf and snorkel in Kahaluu Bay, and stroll through gardens of fragrant plumeria, colorful heleconia, and native ulu (breadfruit), kukui (candlenut), and hala (pandanus).  Here, sunsets paint the sky with passion and stars light the heavens like brilliant jewels.

Discover tales of old Hawaii at King David Kalakaua's beach cottage; at the sites of three heiau, ancient stone temples; and at the royal bathing pool.  Throughout the resort are murals by renowned artist Herb Kane, outrigger canoes carved from prized koa wood, and displays of delicate feather lei.

We are still working out the logistics of the camp; but we have secured either garden or ocean view rooms for all of our guests. The Keahou Beach Resort is located on Hawaii's Kona coast, with easy air access from the Mainland and neighbor islands.

Both the Beamer ‘ohana and my family have a long history with the Keahou and we truly believe you will love it as much as we do.

I have updated the camp website with more information and we are once again taking reservations.

Hi Mark,
I talked with my friend Dennis Lake yesterday about this new plan. We both think people will really enjoy Keauhou. Good energy down there, and the Keauhou Beach Resort seems to be the center of it. Keahou Beach Resort retains it's cultural connection, and pays attention to the things which the malihini appreciate. Shirley and I had Easter brunch there with some musician friends, and found the food to be quite good!
There are lovely gardens around the grounds, and places where musicians can get together. Kahalu'u Beach, just north of the property has the finest snorkeling in the islands - over 270 species of fish and 2 species of sea turtles make it their home. There is also a sunset bar which features local Hawaiian music several nights a week.
Congratulations on making a great choice in the face of difficult conditions!

Aloha,
-Konabob

Aloha KonaBob,

Mark has said "no day visitors", but can you have night visitors? Since you live so close, we'd love to come see you and your lovely wife...

Hugs, Julie

Hi Julie!
Won't it be great to have you and Larry in our neck of the woods! I did a Google Map ( http://tinyurl.com/4tz2te) that shows the quickest route to Holualoa.
Dennis tells me that there might be a couple of evenings when Shirley and I might be able to come down to the resort. It only takes about 15 minutes.
Hope you have been practicing your steel guitar!
Aloha,

Press Release: April 16

The Aloha Music Camp scheduled for June 22 through 28, 2008 will take place as scheduled, although it is moving to a new “Hale”.

“While we are disappointed that we could not hold this summer’s camp on the island of Molokai, we are thrilled at the opportunities that await us at the Keauhou Hotel in Kona on the island of Hawaii,” Mark Nelson, administrator for the Aloha Music Camp stated. “The hotel staff has been overwhelmingly accommodating to us as we go through this unexpected transition and we are confident that the camp will continue with the same spirit of aloha that it has always had in years past.” The new location is steeped in cultural significance and the rich history of the area is carefully protected in the three heiau, the replica of King Kalakaua’s beach cottage and the royal bathing pools.

Aloha Music Camp, LLC. has held its annual camp at Molokai Ranch’s Kaupoa Beach Village for the last five years, and were forced to find an alternative home for the approximately 100 campers already committed to participate this June after Molokai Ranch’s closure April 5th.

The Beamer Family, Hawaii’s First Family of Music, has been active as singers, dancers, and keepers of traditional Hawaiian culture for generations. Visitors from around the world seeking something more than “surf and sand” and Kama`aina who want to deepen their connection “home” gather for one week in a casual, comfortable setting hosted by the Beamer ‘ohana. Emphasis doesn’t need to be put on creating an “authentic event”; it just happens naturally, with old family friends and respected Kumu from across Hawaii Nei, along with a 60% repeat Camper factor - arrival day is always one of lei, warm greetings and re-connecting.

Says Mark Nelson, “The one Kumu that will undoubtedly be missed this year is our beloved Kupuna, Auntie Nona Beamer.” “While we are all saddened at Mom’s passing, we wish to honor her spirit and passion by continuing her teaching, ” her son Keola stated. Mark Nelson added, “Auntie Nona’s fondest wish was that we remember her with song and so we will. This June, and at every Aloha Camp thereafter, we will break out our `ukulele and guitars and join our voices in song dedicated to her memory and continued presence. We will dance, laugh and talk story, as there is no better way to share the aloha of this remarkable woman.__ And I just know that if we listen with our hearts, we will hear her clap her hands and sing out, ‘Maika`i no, maika`i no’..."

In addition to the Beamer ‘ohana–slack key pioneer Keola, dancer Moanalani and Hawaiian language specialist Kaliko–this summer’s session will feature Robyn Knuebuhl (Hula & `Ukulele), Kevin Brown (Slack Key), Geri Valdriz (Steel Guitar), Tommy Cheng (Puppeteer), Aoi Wright (Lomi Lomi), Dennis Lake (Build your own ‘Ukulele) and Mark Kailana Nelson (Slack Key & ‘Ukulele).

While close to selling out, there are still a few openings. Don’t miss this chance to participate in what promises to be a very special and memorable Aloha Music Camp.

For more information and to register, please refer to Aloha Music Camp’s website: www:alohamusiccamp.com. For more information on the Keauhou Hotel, go to http://www.outrigger.com/hotels-resorts/hawaiian-islands/hawaii-big-island/keauhou-beach-resort./

---------

Small print disclaimer: Actually, the bit about almost selling out is no longer true. We have had so many cancellations that we can happily accommodate each and every one of you.

In fact, we'd love to.

After hearing from a few residents of Hawai`i who want to attend the Aloha Camp but live near enough to commute, we have decided to offer a day student rate. This will include all the workshops, classes, and evening concerts, as well as three meals -- mealtime is such an import part of the ohana feeling at camp!

This is all happening very fast & I haven't have the chance to put this on the camp website-- if you are interested, or know someone who is, please contact me directly. You can send an e-mail via Taropatch, or go the the camp website.

Quick note: Online registration has been updated thanks to our hardworking webslave.

Aloha all -

Nancy Lake has created a wonderful design for our 2008 camp T-s and other items. The design features a lehua blossom and one of the butterflies so dear to the heart of our kupuna, Auntie Nona.

If you are registered for camp, you will get a special T-shirt; but please check out the online store for lots of wonderful items like hats, tote bags, mugs, sweatshirts and more.

Aloha,

I'm new to the camp this year. Counting the days. Kelly and I celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversaries in Hawaii. It is strange the way things work themselves out. (The camp this summer and the fact that Kelly and I celebrated our 20th at Keauhou Hotel at Kona, in 2003). For the people that haven't been to Keauhou, we really enjoyed it. The sunsets and the mana are fabulous. We signed up for Molokai, something new, and now we are going back to a place we love. The slack key will be new. I don't know if I will be able to play for a week, but I'm looking forward to meeting new people and sharing my love of Hawaiian Ki Ho'alu with my new ohana. Let's get to know eachother fellow campers.

On time, In tune, Aloha

Aloha Campers!
I'm thrilled to be coming to June Camp on the big Island!!! My amazingly sweet husband is sending me for a solo papaya adventure as my Hula Ho'ike gift. He and my seven year old daughter will wait at home for their malasadas, crack seed, and what I'm sure will be wonderful stories from camp.
Mark and I also spent an anniversary (can't remember which one) at Keauhou Beach and we loved it. Even more special is my Dad and his wife live up in Ocean View and we'll be able get in some diving I hope.
I'm so looking forward to meeting everyone!
What?! is only May-no can wait!
Me ke aloha pumehana,

Aloha kakou -

I have just returned from a quick trip to the Keauhou Beach Resort to finalize details for next month's Aloha Music Camp. I am very impressed with the facility, the location, and above all the staff.

The resort is owned by Kamehameha Schools, and the commitment to Hawaiian culture and education is apparent in everything they do. There are active restorations of several heiau on the grounds and beautiful shady gardens just perfect for our classes.

I am sure each and every one of you will enjoy your stay as much as I did.

NEWS FLASH!

Due to the closure of the Molokai Ranch we have had quite a few cancellations. Our misfortune might be good news for you or someone you know: If you want to join us, we have room for you.

I can't say how long these openings will last. So hop to it!

BTW: I got a very good last minute airfare and rental car deal courtesy of a local travel agent-- much better than any of the online sites!

We have added a single occupancy rate for Garden View Rooms on a space available basis; check the website for details. Please note: we may not be able to swap your room if you are already signed up-- this is primarily for new registrations. We also have space for a few more day students.

Come celebrate the life and music of Auntie Nona and the Beamer `ohana on their home island.
